Book Description

May 29, 2012

“A vivid portrait of a troubled country.” —The New York Times

Corruption, drug smuggling, rampant human rights abuses—New York journalist Lindsay Cameron finds plenty to report, covering the regime of Nigeria’s President Michael Olumide. But in the aftermath of two probable assassinations, her inquiries attract unwanted government attention. As rebel factions call for free elections, Lindsay races to penetrate the intricate network of corrupt government officials, oil interests, and CIA agents who really run the Nigerian show. Meanwhile, her entanglement with a rare art dealer leads her still deeper into terrain that’s confounding in every respect – from matters of the heart to those of politics and trade. Drawing from Nina Darnton’s own experiences living in Africa during the mid-1970s—including imprisonment in Nigeria with her two small children—An African Affair is an edge-of-your-seat debut thriller in the bestselling tradition of The Constant Gardener and The Last King of Scotland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best African Fiction Since Out of Africa July 23, 2011

A Great summer read.

Darnton brings the reader deep into the fabric of 1990's Nigerian Politics and life with a sensitivity rare from an American writer. The novel is not just entertaining and interesting, but I felt like I learned alot as well.

I just saw the author interviewed on NY 1 and she mentioned that she will soon begin writing "A Spanish Affair."

I can't wait.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page-turning fiction August 17, 2011
Format:Hardcover
An African Affair is a fast-paced tale of danger, politics, journalism, love, poverty, and all manner of corruption. In addition to getting glued to the page by cliff-hangers and switcheroos, the reader learns a lot about West African history, tribal art, espionage and intelligence, and especially about the frenzy that happens among journalists in hot spots. The protagonist, Lindsay, is driven by moral concerns, love, career competition, and an insatiable addiction to taking risks. That's something that propels the story over and over: Pandora, don't open that box...!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Affair to Remember August 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A wonderful way to take a trip this summer. This is an engaging adventure/mystery/modern relationship tale with episodes you'll recognize from the news, people you may have read about, and places you'd like to learn about. They are all woven into a fast-moving atmospheric tale that makes you feel you are there, and with people you're glad are there with you. Intimately observed and gracefully reported.
