5.0 out of 5 stars Great for a class library, February 1, 2010

This review is from: An American History Album: The Story of the United States Told Through Stamps (Hardcover)
I bought this as a present for a fifth grade history and language arts teacher, to supplement her class library. I was very pleased when it arrived, seems to be very nicely put together and it provides a different perspective on history (through stamps). And the teacher loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read, fantastic photographs, March 11, 2011

I am thrilled to finally have this book. I am a novice stamp collector, and a history buff. The book (mine is hard cover) is well made, and the margins are designed such that you can comfortably open the book and read without putting pressure on the binding to read within the inside margins.

The pages are heavy, glossy stock, and add to the brilliance and beauty of the sotries and individual stamps.

Think of this as a gift for young children, or any age looknig to explore history ("Cliff Notes version" of course) and/or explore becoming a stamp collector.

This book gives us stories of history and of some of the stamps issued to commemorate the history.

It's a beautiful book and anyone interested in stamps or history will enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice book, right for some people but not me, February 27, 2013

This is a pretty well put together book. It matters with a book like this that this images of the stamps are vibrant, correctly colored and details - and they are, generally. And I think the text is just fine. I think this is a great book for a young person, not too familiar with US history or stamps.

But as a novice collector of stamps and a fairly sophisticated reader of history, this was a disappointment. It is a version of US history that I would expect from a middle school history book - not terrible, but just very watered down and general.

And it is critically important to know that there is practically no history about stamps - what history of stamps there is is general, rather than weaving together the design choices, production changes, collecting practices, and unfolding historical events in the US. That is, this is essentially a basic, highly general, very short US history book, that shows pictures of stamps to illustrate that history.

This is not at all a bad book - highly recommended in fact for middle school or high school kids - but not for anyone with a deeper interest in design, history or the deeper role of stamps in our national life and experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars History by Stamps, December 1, 2011

This book shows how the commemorative stamps that have been issued by the USPS since the late 1800's do indeed commemorate either events, places or persons of historical significance. The information behind the person, place or event is often quite compelling. Much of the history of the USA is covered by these stamp issuances and by looking into the information behind those stamps like this book does can teach much of that history.

5.0 out of 5 stars very well done book, November 4, 2012

I have to admit to being more of a numismatist than a philatelist, but I loved this book. Way more than I was expecting. Broken up into different themes in US history and stamps that embody those themes. With the decrease in the volume of snail mail as a result of e mail and the www it can be easy to forget the use of stamps that many of us grew up with. This book highlights and showcases the artisitic beauty associated with these wonderful pieces of Americana. The thematic presentation also allows the reader to understand the context in which these stamps were introduced. Great concept and great execution in a truly fascinating book. This book would be of interest to those interested in stamp collecting as well as those with an interest in United States history. Well worth the time if you fit into either of those two categories. Fantastic.
