About the Author

Richard Cezar writes fiction based on his own personal military experiences and those of his friends. In 1965 he was trained as a military policeman and sent to South Korea. After leaving the military, he became a mechanical engineer. Several years later became the vice president of a multinational corporation. He had the opportunity to visit Asia and Europe, and was fascinated with diverse cultures. His lust for adventure, and an insatiable desire for meaning, caused him to start writing.

More About the Author

The belief that my life has been extraordinary ends abruptly in my first encounter with one of my fellows. We've all had lives laced with sorrow and exaltation. I have been lucky enough to have traveled a bit more than most. In my journeys, I have been gifted with exposure to multiple cultures and wonderfully diverse points of view. In my writings I endeavor to extract the emotions from those experiences and set them to print. In doing so, I find that we are not so diverse after all, and find that we are partners in the human condition.

The first pages impressed me. Cezar writes intelligently with a good “voice.” I breezed through several chapters—a real quick read. And I liked the book. The author skillfully brought back old memories. Although not at the same time, we had walked the same streets, listened to the same sounds, and smelled the same smells. Cezar shows a good memory to so accurately portray a soldier’s life away from home almost fifty years ago.

He chose well to embellish his story and he did it nicely, presenting the reader with a few unexpected twists and turns and some well crafted excitement. But this wasn’t a run-of-the-mill police procedural. It’s a coming-of-age story about people, and one in particular who struggled to accept that through Uncle Sam’s conscription, the Army could turn his world upside down and send him half way around the world to live in a culture as different from his life in the American Midwest as oil is from water.

Cezar takes us through the day-to-day police work and social life of the men assigned to “Charlie” Company, 728th MP Battalion in Seoul. We also get to wander through Cezar’s mind as he questions the ethics of some of his comrades, the efficiency and common sense of a few of the officers and NCOs he meets, and he wonders why the press never tells the folks back home that soldiers were being shot and killed regularly in a place not officially called a war zone.

The story soon takes a more worldly turn when North Koreans attack a platoon of American GIs at the DMZ and a soldier is killed in Seoul during the time President LBJ is visiting Korean President Pak, Chung He. Spec 4 Cezar asks, ‘Are these incidents connected? What’s really happening here?’ We soon find out.

I especially enjoyed the last fifty pages when I saw the sixteen months Cezar spent in Korea netted him what I envisioned as a potential lifetime of happiness. I hope that came true. Good book. Well done, GI.

I have always been interested in reading about U.S. Military History, but for some reason, my interest did not apply to the situation in Korea. I suppose I felt the conflict was relatively minor and much less compelling when compared to the American Civil War and World War II. To be honest, the main reason I picked up this book was because of the cover which I found to be intriguing and mysterious. I am glad that I did because I found it an absorbing read from the start.

Cezar does an excellent job describing Seoul of the 1960s, well before the economic growth which made South Korea one of the world's wealthiest nations. The Seoul described in this book is much more primitive, threatening place. It is also an exciting place where seemingly anything can happen (not all of it good).

Cezar does a great job in developing his characters as well. I especially enjoyed the dialogue and humorous banter between him and the members of his Company throughout the book.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It is engrossing, mysterious, and humorous. Furthermore, the ending caught me off completely off guard. I thought I knew where it was headed but I was wrong. Kudos to the author!

I gave this book 5 stars! This is my first book by Richard Cezar and was impressed with both the book cover and its contents. This author laid the groundwork for his story by giving his readers background information about his life and thoughts before he was drafted. I always wondered how people deal with first being away from loved ones and then facing daily and constant danger? Richard has taken the time to give his readers all the details they need to feel they are an active part of his story. If you love adventure, romance, sex, mystery and espionage - check this book out. Hats off to an author that has a talent for writing that keeps you wanting more.
