Now having purchased this box set and listening to Mickey again I appreciate the music even more.

Mickey Newbury is one of the very few artists able to blend supreme songwriting skills with a great ear for melody and an even greater voice.

Four discs 41,39,37,44 minutes each approximately. The digitally mastered sound, from the original tapes, is clean, immediate, and open. Each disc is in a separate cardboard sleeve with subtle graphics in keeping with the overall presentation. The 95 page (!) booklet contains essays and some original liner notes by Chris Campion, Ben Fog Torres, Kris Kristofferson, Kenny Rogers, Will Oldham, and others. Also included are many (small) b&w and color photos throughout the booklet. Taken together, this is a very fine overview of Newbury, his writing, his arrangements, and the era. Also included is a fairly large (folded) map of the U.S., with certain locales pinpointed, with explanations underneath the map-a nice touch. On the back of the map are the lyrics to the songs that make up this trilogy. The outer box itself is a work of art befitting Newbury's talents-from the embossed graphics on the lid, to the choice of the roughish cardboard used, and other small but significant touches. This box set puts other sets to shame, and is a fine example of what a record label who cares about an artist is capable of doing-it's understated yet classy. This is advertised on the box itself as a "limited edition box set", so if you want it, buy it now rather than later. This box set is manufactured in Berlin.

THE NEW EDITION OF THIS SET IS PACKAGED DIFFERENTLY. Instead of a box, the discs are inside a "wallet style" cardboard holder, which opens into five pockets that house the discs and the booklet-there are no individual sleeves. The booklet is 24 pages not 95 pages as in my import edition. There's no map or lyrics in this edition either. That first edition can still be purchased through Amazon.

This is a terrific collection of a criminally underrated singer-songwriter. Mickey Newbury is one of the very few artists able to blend supreme songwriting skills with a great ear for melody and an even greater voice. His eloquent and melancholic brand of country music lifts him far above the mainstream of the genre, and would raise and move the heart of any music-lover.

As a lyricist, he ranks with the very greatest, with a profound gift for precise and uncompromising poetry. Just listen to the simple and heartbreaking truths he utters in a song like Frisco Depot: `When you're alone there's nothing as slow as passing time, / When you're afoot, there's nothing as fast as a train.' Or take the unashamedly poetic description that opens `How Many Times must the Piper':

Morning came and found her at the window
With her nose pressed to the glass
The dew was like a broken diamond necklace
Left scattered on the grass

Yet for all his lyrical talents, it's his voice that stays with me in the night. If there's any singer that can `bring strong men to tears' surely this is the guy. I won't even try to describe his singing, except by saying that Mickey Newbury reminds us that the human voice remains the most expressive and moving of all human instruments.

Originally issued in Germany (Berlin) in May 2011 as a pricey box set with a 95-page booklet and fold-out map containing the lyrics on the other side (now deleted) - this 'altered' reissue followed only months after (August 2011). As you can imagine - fans that forked out over sixty-five pounds/ninety dollars for the initial import were a tad peeved and felt taken for a ride. However (and there's no meanness intended here) - you'd have to say that their loss is very much our gain - because this scaled-down reissue finally makes Mickey Newbury's extraordinary music available to us all - and at a reasonable price too - eighteen pounds/thirty dollars for 4CDs worth.

Released 23 August 2011 on Saint Cecelia Knows/Mountain Retreat CEC001R - this reissue comes in a 5-way foldout card-pack with cardboard-colored front artwork (instead of the black embossed original) and a curtailed booklet of 24-pages (no map either). The CDs are the same as the initial issue and break down as follows:

Disc 1 (41:31 minutes): Tracks 1 to 7 are his debut album "Looks Like Rain" - issued in the USA on Mercury Records SR 61236 in September 1969

Disc 2 (38:53 minutes): Tracks 1 to 11 are his 2nd album "'Frisco Mabel Joy" - issued in the USA on Elektra Records EKS-74107 in October 1971

Disc 3 (37:14 minutes): Tracks 1 to 8 are his 3rd album "Heaven Help The Child" - issued in the USA on Elektra Records EKS-75055 in January 1973

Disc 4 (44:46 minutes): Tracks 1 to 15 are called "Better Days (Demos, Rarities, Unreleased)" and break down as follows:
1. If You Want Me To I'll Go
2. Sunshine
3. Sad Satin Rhyme
4. Why You Been Gone So Long
5. I Don't Wanna Rock (Publisher Demo)
6. Let Me Stay Awhile
7. Flower Man
8.

Years ago I had all these on vinyl and would lie down at night when everything was quiet and listen to them. At first I was stunned upon hearing all the weird weather like sounds between tracks and soon realized with awe what a talent Mickey was. I saw him a couple times on different TV shows and couldn't understand why he wasn't a big star. I acquired everything I could find of his and loved all of it. Unfortunately when I was in the military all of my records were lost or stolen. Now having purchased this box set and listening to Mickey again I appreciate the music even more. I would suggest to anyone, go buy this set, don't wait for soon it will be out of stock, music this great doesn't stay available for long. Put the CD's on, lie down, close your eyes and marvel at what a gifted singer Mickey Newbury was.
