Editorial Reviews

Review

"Adam Embry has served us well by assembling some choice selections from Flavel's writing for us in this volume. May your heart be strengthened by listening to, pondering, and applying Flavel's encouragements here."
- Dr. Shawn D. Wright, associate professor of church history, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

John Flavel blended skillfully a robust Reformed theology with a warm-hearted Puritan piety. This made his writings both profound and simple. I pray that Adam Embry s primer on Flavel s work will promote a new generation of thoughtful readers intent on loving Christ more. --Ryan McGraw, pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Conway, South Carolina

A clear, well-edited, and helpful introduction to Flavel's (1627-1691) writings. Flavel believed that "the keeping and the right managing of the heart in every condition is the great business of a Christian life (44). He therefore provided the biblical and analytical tools necessary for the earnest Christian to draw closer to God; an incredible resource for overcoming self-deception and learning to rejoice over the sweet consolation of the Word and Spirit.

Recommend for all.

These selected writings from Flavel helped me in three ways.

First, he helped me do hard heart work. Sections 2 and 3 spend considerable time identifying and rooting out various sins including fear, anger and even distraction in worship.

Second, he helped me understand how sin works in my life. Section four dwells on the differences between how a believer and an unbeliever respond to sin in their heart.

Finally, Flavel comforted me in my own time of trial. At several points, Flavel writes about suffering and death in ways that are honest and pastoral. These reflections still minister to the reader hundreds of years after they were first written.

I would encourage you to read this book devotionally. Each chapter is only a two to three pages long. Adam Embry has served us by selecting these writings with a helpful introduction and guide to reading Flavel. Allow these two pastors to serve you through this book.

Adam Embry is uniquely prepared to compose a selection of Flavel's works due to his extensive research into his works. The book begins with a helpful overview to Flavel's life and contributions. The book is then divided into four sections containing excerpts from Flavel's writings: Christ Rules the Heart, Keeping the Heart, Seasons of the Heart, and Discerning the Heart. The chosen excerpts wonderfully illustrate Flavel's personal piety and his love of the people he shepherded. The fourth section in particular has some wonderful excerpts on sin, and it effectively illustrates Flavel's contributions for which men to this day benefit from. The book then concludes with a helpful guide on how to read Flavel around a six-volume Banner of Truth edition.

This book is a wonderful contribution to understanding Puritan spirituality generally and Flavel specifically. It is an important inclusion should you desire to be encouraged by this great man of faith.
