Product Description

Idiot Abroad, An: Season 2

Amazon.com

The misery of Karl Pilkington, unique thinker and favorite whipping boy of Ricky Gervais, is once again offered up for laughs in the second season of the BBC reality/comedy series An Idiot Abroad. After dispatching Pilkington to the Seven Wonders of the World in the first season, Gervais and Stephen Merchant once again convince their erstwhile radio producer to fulfill a "bucket list" of experiences that most people hope to achieve before their death. Pilkington, however, is not most people--he is perhaps most politely described as an avowed homebody who appreciates the shallower things in life--and his extreme discomfort at being forced to travel the globe and face a host of unique experiences is the backbone of the show's humor and appeal. Gervais and Merchant are largely off-screen, reveling in their chance to shake up Pilkington's narrow world by forcing him to endure a centrifuge at a cosmonaut training facility in Russia, plunge into shark-infested waters, consume animal droppings, be embraced by a gaggle of New Age therapists, and endure an on-camera prostate exam at the series' close. While many of the encounters would cause even the most adventurous viewer to have second thoughts, some moments are unique, once-in-a-lifetime scenarios, like coming face-to-face with an African mountain gorilla or climbing Japan's Mount Fuji. Pilkington's response to these situations is the same po-faced, mumbled litany of complaints he reserves for the series' more hideous challenges, which wipes away a lot of sympathy for his tribulations. In the end, An Idiot Abroad is less of a travelogue about the most unusual places and events in the world and more about a man who views them with the bleary, grey-colored glasses of a terminally checked-out individual. Your appreciation of the series will depend entirely on whether you regard Pilkington as funny or baffling; the DVD includes all 16 episodes, as well as a collection of clips set to his rendition of Chas & Dave's "Ain't No Pleasing You" and Pilkington hawking his own invention, "Pilko's Pump Pants," on television. --Paul Gaita

5.0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than Karl! January 8, 2012

If you've never seen, or listened to, Karl Pilkington along with Ricky and Steve, you are missing out on one of the most hilarious and, well...insightful human brains in the world. It's impossible for me to watch this without laughing so hard that I have to pause to catch my breath. Yes, it's Region 2 (UK) and won't play on US players, but there are good multi-region players out there for those of us in the US desperate for excellent shows like this, Being Human, Misfits, etc.

I love, love love this show! It's hilarity is endless. Karl Pilkington is a diamond in the rough. A real gem. Ricky and his producing partner Steven had the best idea to send Carl around the World. The best. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious June 10, 2012
Season 2 is even better than the first. I have to keep pausing it because I'm laughing so hard. I love Karl and I didn't even know who he was until I watched this show recently. I have never listened to the podcast even though I like Ricky. I need more of Karl now though!!

This is the funniest program I have seen in ages. Great British humour.. Be prepared to laugh out loud. An Idiot abroad 1 is also just as funny. I have now seen both DVD's and rate them equally.

5.0 out of 5 stars top notch July 31, 2012
By Joy
Loved every single minute of Karl whinging and moaning as he travels the world once again. Showing what no other travel show dares to reveal, the real in's and out's. How I long for a third season, but alas I know it's only a dream!

Season 2 is almost as good as the first season. I love them both. Didn't buy Season 3, as I didn't think I would watch it as often as the first 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars The usual shenanigans
But that is why this show is so great. But then again I might hate flying too if it involved standing on the wing.

I love these guys and enjoyed the first series quite a bit, but I'm at an age where my hearing is going South. Sometimes I need to put on subtitles. Read more

It's really funny but it's on net flicks now so don't spend the money. I've seen all seasons and enjoyed them.
