God Help the Child
A fierce and provocative novel that adds a new dimension to the matchless oeuvre of Toni Morrison.

Book Description

A tale of three women and their struggle for freedom in the ‘Man's World’ of modern India.

Priti, a successful lawyer, seeks a new life in the south after being gang raped in her Delhi apartment. Sangita is a village girl from Rajasthan. She is forced to flee a brutal and loveless marriage and seek shelter in Delhi, where she finds a job as a cleaner. Tara is a Nepalese school girl who is rescued from the horror of a Delhi brothel and returns to Nepal in search of her brother.

Their paths may never have crossed, but for the brutal actions of men.

The women’s experiences are reflected in the deep ocean of Hindu mythology that surrounds them – a mythology that condemns and fears women, and at the same time venerates and worships them.

In this story of sisterhood, sexual politics, discrimination and empowerment, the women transcend tradition, break taboo and attempt to live their lives with dignity despite all that has happened to them.

But be careful. She is watching; the goddess who is both the beauty and the beast. You see, it is the hour of Sandhya, and nothing is certain in the dusky half-light.

I wanted to get my star rating in quickly, but am not allowed by Amazon to star the book without adding a review. I don't have time to write an in-depth review yet, not one that will do this incredible story justice. For now, suffice to say this is a fantastic story from a tremendously gifted author whose life choices have enabled him to understand human nature, and Indian culture in great depth. I've read other work by Wenlock; he never disappoints. I highly recommend An Indian Alchemy: Gods, Girls and Men. See for yourself, just open the book and have a look. You won't be disappointed. Read through The Running Girl. I'll be back to review in greater detail as soon as time permits.
