Book Description

Spoiled New York rogue Royce Mc Arthur lives a charmed life. He sees no reason to settle down, until his mother issues her decree that he must grow up, find a wife and produce some grandchildren, preferably before she dies of old age. But his choices are quite limited considering the only women of his acquaintance are ones of ill repute.

Meeting the beautiful Evelyn DeJarlias at a ball gives him hope he may have found the one. Her southern blue collar outspokenness and lack of refinement draws him like a moth to a flame. Unfortunately, she does not find him nearly as endearing -- consistently refusing his lavish gifts and his attentions, she poses a challenge he simply cannot ignore.

When his mother and her widowed father begin to keep company together secretly, it provides the perfect excuse for him to spend time with Miss DeJarlias. But figures from Royces past threaten to destroy the blossoming love between the couple. Evelyn must decide if she is willing to trust the man or hold his past indiscretions against him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Liked it! March 2, 2012
By Tifferz
Format:Kindle Edition
I really liked this read. Ms. Van Dyken really knows how to create a fun read that you can't possibly put down. I liked how Evelyn has a just tell it like it is attitude. Oh, the things she says. I was smiling and laughing throughout the story. Royce is so spoiled but I liked him as well. They are a fun pair. This story also has a secondary romance in the story. Royces mother and Evelyn's father are really fun.

I only wish that Ms. Van Dyken had Evelyn hold out a little bit with the conflict that arises. I think she forgave him to quickly. But that is just me. I would have also liked to know the year that the story took place Other than that a wonderful read for an afternoon. This is a clean read for those interested and it contains No swearing or sex.

1.0 out of 5 stars More research of the time period required!! August 26, 2012
By 43lake
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was not a good read for me. The time period does not match the writing. We have a man and a woman unchaperoned,a man giving lavish gifts, a man and a woman calling each other by their first name, a woman saying "sexual prowess" to a man she just met, mixed in with curtseys, a French chef, a ballroom, and a waltz.
These things do NOT match. Next, we have that same man and woman alone in a carriage, alone in his kitchen where he begins sucking her finger, and I quote" Now they were alone in his house late into the evening".
There was no mention of chaperones, request for permission to court, or any of the other requirements expected of a man who "hadn't compromised the girl".
Please do research about the time period in which you are writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner! February 2, 2012
By Onelady
Format:Kindle Edition
Ms. Van Dyken pulls you into this great story of what seems to be an unequal yoking of two characters whose lives should never have joined. You will find yourself cheering for their moments alone - tastefully written, but with just the right amount of sexual tension - each one bringing them closer to a culminating union. A surprising parallel coupling gives the story a warm "family" feel. Enjoy reading this book while you eagerly await "The Redemption of Lord Rawlings." Keep up the great work, Ms. Van Dyken!

Even though I didn't love this book. It was an easy read. Great if you only have a short time and want something lite. I wish the author spent more time developing the characters and creating a more captivating plot. The story had some good scenes and I believe this author has the potential to create something better and fully engaging.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very good December 13, 2012

It was ok. Not a real long story but it was okay. I don't think the author did a lot of period research because change the clothes and add cars and cell phones and it could have been set in any time period

4.0 out of 5 stars Romantic regency November 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
An Unlikely Alliance by Rachel Van Dyken is just that - the romantic escapades of a very unlikely couple. This regency romance follows Evelyn De Jarlais, a southern farm girl suddenly thrust into New York society, and Royce McArthrur, a wealthy merchant playboy used to having his way with women. When Royce sets his sights on Evelyn, he gets more than he was expecting. She is forthright and feisty - characteristics he is not used to, which of course, heightens his attraction. For her part, Evelyn fears Royce's reputation as a rake, and wonders if she can really trust him. However, the couple soon find that they have another mutual problem on their hands and must work together to discover the truth. The book is short and sweet, with some well written romantic scenes that sizzle. I liked the flawed nature of both of the main characters. I felt like the resolution came a little too quickly after the a moment of potential devastation, but overall, it was a quick and easy read which I enjoyed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good November 20, 2012

This book was not well written at all.

The story is confusing , and the language used by the characters a bit hard to understand , is this the language they used in that era? A bit more research on the part of the author would have been wise.

It also seemed too crude. I only read to chapter 3 couldn't bring myself to finish it and deleted it from my kindle.

I would not recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painfully Bad October 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I couldn't stand to keep reading it. There was minimal character development, the dialogue was awful, and there was no anticipation. The characters didn't feel anything near realistic and it didn't seem like the author did any research on the time period at all.
