Book Description

Edward Crawdon, Duke of Hartridge is being forced by his slightly overbearing, but loving mother to spend time with her old friends at their estate in Ireland. He is not aware but a contract exists between the two families that states Edward must marry their eldest daughter. On the day of his arrival Edward, who is yet to be made aware of the contract, meets Lady Rebecca, Caroline’s younger sister under very unusual circumstances. Edward cannot stop thinking about Lady Rebecca but she is completely unsuited to being a duchess. However, she becomes rather a toast of the Ton and Edward realises that he cannot stand idly by and watch Rebecca marry someone else. He cannot marry her but does not want her to marry anyone else! Ultimately, Edward must decide; will he admit his true feelings for Rebecca? Will he defy his responsibilities and duties, his idea of a “proper” duchess and follow his heart?

5.0 out of 5 stars Gifted by author for an honest review April 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Duke of Hartridge is young, handsome and unbeknownst to him, he's about to meet his betrothed Duchess. It's a pact his father made with a dear friend before their children were born... in order to keep them from the dreadful scene of being in season in the 'ton, akin to spouse hunting.

Edward didn't know about the pact when his mother took him to meet some "dear friends" of the family for the week. Turns out he was the only one who didn't know. Young Caroline had been educated to be his Duchess since she was born, due to the pact the fathers had concocted. She was proper, sat with her hands in her lap, had beautiful, shiny, golden hair and eyes like the sky. *insert eye roll here. Caroline was also a bit on the cold side. As if all of this work and preparation were a duty of sorts.

Within minutes of arriving at the house and meeting Caroline, Edward caught on and was trying to find the right moment to put an end to the ridiculous idea of arranging his future wife, when he saw HER. She was cursing like a sailor, running from the grove of trees out onto the courtyard and up a marble man, to untangle the kite that wound itself around the unsuspecting statue. It was sight to behold and Edward is not only amused, but she is the most beautiful and unexpected woman he has ever seen. It is Caroline's younger sister, Rebecca. Full of life and reckless abandon, she was everything he was not considering for a future wife/Duchess.

From the moment he saw her, he could think of no one or nothing else. He would lean in to smell her citrusy scent, tense up with desire at her chestnut hair that seemed to always be on the verge of exploding from the tight bun and hairpins trying to rein it in. He admired her quick wit and her beauty.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wanted to Like It June 22, 2014

After all the lovely reviews, I had high hopes for Ms. Millard's novel. I'm sorry, I really tried to like this story and forced myself to finish it in the hopes that I would, but there were just too many cliches and worn out elements. The characters were flat and their immediate attraction didn't make sense other than that each is gifted with ridiculous beauty. I never really got to know either of them from their own actions but had to be told by the author whether one was arrogant or the other caring and compassionate. The liberal use of exclamation points as the author tells us about the characters' thoughts does not make them any more interesting. About two-thirds of the way through the story the reader is informed that the hero and heroine have many deep conversations in which they learn about each other, but we are not privy to the conversations in any way, so really, the skin-deep attractions are not moved forward in any way. Of course, the reader does not get to know them any better, either. The language is far too modern, and though there does seem to be meticulous details in the descriptions of the clothes worn by the women in the novel, there is little otherwise to anchor the story in the Regency era. The reader is also exposed to one overused Romance trope after another: the hoyden heroine, the stuffy hero, the prickly arguments which are (the only) testimony to their attraction, the bitter commoner with designs on the heroine who later becomes her kidnapper, the penniless friend of the hero in love with an out of reach woman, the scheming (but gorgeous!) widow with designs on the hero who enables the kidnapping, the stupid misunderstandings and stubborn lack of communication between the heroine and hero, the heroine on the verge of (gasp! 5.0 out of 5 stars loved it!!! April 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I adored this book! I simply slipped into another world reading it and left all worries behind! I can't wait for the next one!!! I'm already missing my regency bubble.I think Rebecca is hilarious! Reckless, adventurous and absolutely scandalous.I was rooting for her from the beginning! I found myself laughing out loud at the quick and witty remarks always pouring from Rebecca. I found her thoroughly entertaining! It's one of those books that I'm sad to have come to an end.... Looking so forward to a sequel

I am always on the lookout for new authors as I am an avid reader and wow am I glad I bought this book. It was entirely entertaining and had so many true LOL moments I read the entire book in one sitting. I do love that our heroine was no simpering miss and the fact the Duke even when bewildered could never do anything but laugh. Watching their love develop was exactly how a good romance novel is supposed to happen! I cannot wait for the next one!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Read April 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
No need for me summarize, but I did want to take a moment to say how much I enjoyed this story. There were many LOL moments with very likable, well developed h/H. They drove me crazy with the little misunderstandings, but since both were not the type to suffer in silence, and had explosive tempers, it was part of what made some of the LOL moments. I am going to put this author on my favorites list and hope for more from her in the future.

More About the Author

Hey everyone!

I'm Nadine, a writer from County Laois in Ireland.

My debut novel, a Regency Romance called An Unlikely Duchess debuted in March 2014, with Book Two, Seeking Scandal, debuting July 2014. There is a final book in the series, Mysterious Miss Channing releasing in January 2015.

I'm also part of a box set, Forbidden, Regency Romance which contains my novella, A Winter Wish.

My brain is constantly full of stories and characters so don't be surprised if I come out with something completely different after that...though I have to say, my heart belongs to Regency!

When I'm not writing I can be found scurrying around after my three children. Or perhaps my dog. I don't scurry after my husband, that's generally the other way around! ;)

I hate housework so only kind of pretend to do it! Love reading (or research as I like to call it).

I have a brilliant family and wonderful friends who are ever patient and supportive of me.

I'm sometimes asked where my inspiration comes from. I guess it's from everywhere! I love my gorgeous husband to distraction so that helps! I think I also put a little bit of people I know into my characters...shhhh ;)

Have an ever so mild obsession with Jane Austen and have properly researched time machines in case there's one who could take me back to 1800s. I know. I need help. My brain might be odd but it's a pretty fun place to be at times!

My writing really took off when my three year old started preschool. So now, while my seven, five and three year old children are being taken care of by teachers, my characters are being taken care of by me!

To be fair though, I can quite regularly be found at 2am glued to the laptop when I get an idea!
