I may be repeating myself but it would be hard to go wrong with Sherlock Holmes as your base story but the writers have captured even more than the original with this series. The 2 main players Sherlock (played exceptionally well by Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (played just as well by Lucy Liu) just add depth to an already interesting story each week. This can be called a bromance, but one of the bros just happens to be a woman. He said that from the very beginning and I think it's really an apt description. There's this idea that a man and a woman can't be together on a show especially without needing to be together sexually or in love or whatever, and this is really about the evolution of a friendship and how that happens. Watching that should be as much the story of this show as the mysteries that you see week in and week out about who killed who. I just know that after a few episodes I was already addicted. The addition of Aidan Quinn as Captain Tobias Gregson of the New York City Police Department was genius. He genuinely likes Holmes and the two have mutual respect for each other so we get to avoid the good cop bad cop plot lines that many shows that have talented citizens playing at detectives, I love The Mentalist but this re-imagining of the Sherlock Holmes story takes the genre to a new level of entertainment.

This second season moves the bar up a bit since Watson (Lucy Liu) is accepted as part of the crime solving team by Holmes, this also brings a bit more entertainment since if the show proceeded as more of a 1-man-show it would get stale. The best thing about this show is not really the cases as much as the interaction of the characters, I can only hope this season maintains the high level of quality television that the first season did.

IMHO, there is not a better show on television. Jonny Lee Miller is absolute perfection as Sherlock Holmes. (That he did not receive an Emmy nomination makes a mockery of the Emmys.) Lucy Liu is almost his equal. I find the interaction between these two to be so unique in that, as much as I love their characters, I don't necessarily wish for their relationship to become romantic. Rather I am charmed by Holmes' growing respect for Watson's abilities. They are both highly intelligent individuals and the writers deserve kudos for such spirited and inventive dialogue.

As dyed in the wool fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle my wife and I have had a few conversations about whether Elementary is a worthy next interpretation of Sherlock Holmes and what Doyle might think of this latest iteration of his run a way acerbic hero. Just as Doyle tried to kill Sherlock off at the Reichenbach Falls but failed to do so due to the immense popularity and staying power of Sherlock I think Elementary is an evolution of the character. Would Doyle like this, perhaps not. Is Elementary enjoyable with twisty, evidence and inspiration filled episodes, most assuredly. Aidan Quin, Lucy Lieu are wonderful in their roles. The twisted interpretations of Mrs. Hudson and brother Mycroft to say nothing of this fresh look at Moriarity are truly delicious. The new Sherlock is at times very annoying and an incomplete caricature of a person that is in itself a departure from the classic Sherlock. Can we stop watching this series? No. If you enjoy a good detective/murder mystery mixed with wild re-interpretation of Doyle's character you will definitely want to give this series a try.

I really didn't expect to like Elementary after being such a fan of Sherlock. To say that the shows are entirely different would be an understatement, but it is not to the detriment of Elementary. Simply put, the show has an amazing cast and the stories work out differently than Sherlock has done. While Sherlock tends to (brilliantly) re-imagine classic stories, Elementary tends to have original content each week. I would say that, while I love Sherlock more, Elementary is probably my favorite current weekly series.

I was skeptical of Lucy Liu as Watson, but she has been the best side-kick that Holmes has ever had. Fast paced, witty, and a superb supporting cast for the two lead actors. I have enjoyed this so much and so enjoy watching without commercials that I have purchased both the first and second seasons.

Wonderful dialog, great actors, and the writers (so far) do not seem to feel the need to have everyone jumping in and out of bed every 15 minutes! So refreshing. And (so far) the writers don't reveal a social agenda that they are trying to impose on the audience. Also refreshing!

Still an excellent show, but the dynamic between Joan and Sherlock seems weaker this year, the bonding is not as strong, in my opinion, and it makes the partnership seem less efficient and unique. As a result, I find the show less mesmerizing than last year. It does not have as strong a hold me as it once did.

TV drama doesn't get much better than this. I refused to watch the series when it first came out. I mean, really, Watson's a woman? I dug in my heels for the whole first season, but a very ill friend insisted that I watch it with her. I was hooked from the first show. Holmes' erratic genius and his high-strung character are portrayed wonderfully in this quirky character who is rising from the ashes of drug addiction. And while my beloved Holmes from Conan Doyle's pen never sank to such black depths of addiction, he was known to recommend a 7% solution to alleviate the boredom. Dr. Watson's intelligence and solid dedication to Holmes is conveyed expertly by Lucy Liu. Nigel Bruce and Edward Hardwicke never did it better. Even Martin Freeman's modern-day counterpart, although well done, can't compare. Way to go girl! High praise to the writers who keep coming up with these great stories, and to the actors who bring them to life. Thanks for this one!
