Review

“Readers will be entranced as Feather infuses her protagonists with intelligence, wit and maturity—along with a dose of sensuality ... What a wonderful and satisfying confusion to The Blackwater Brides series. (4.5/5 stars)”

I wanted to love this book, becaue it finished off a good series. Unfortunately, I didn't. First of all, there was zero chemistry between the hero and heroine. Then, there were a couple of smoldering looks and he's in love? Really? On top of that, the story feels contrived, like the author had to finish the series but didn't know how.
All in all, if you read the first two books, you'd be better off saving your money and imagining that Peregrine does his part. Because, SPOILER - in the end, you're not really sure that the old uncle changed his will in time or not.

The story of the last brother to marry an unsuitable bride was disappointing. As I was reading it I felt that the author, Jane Feather, was just filling in the rest of the story to "get it out of the way." Not as good as the first two books in the trilogy.

I read the other reviews for this book, and I can understand their reactions, but I found the book flowed well and was fun to read. I had no trouble getting through it; started late one evening and finished it the next day. I enjoyed seeing what Alexandra would do next. At the end, it seemed to end a bit abruptly, though it was clear to me how the great uncle's requirements were satisfied.

If you read the other two books, keep reading. You know the characters and this makes it even more fun to finish out the series!

I eagerly awaited this third and final entry in the series. A third of the way through I was beginning to feel let down but kept hoping things would improve. They did not. There wasn't a real sense of closure that you would expect by the end of a series of three novels. Did the uncle fulfill his promise? What about Alex's sister? Did Peregrine step in and rescue Alex's beloved books and oust her wicked relatives? So many questions and no answers! I felt the ending was a letdown, and like the other reviewers felt very little - if any - chemistry between Peregrine and Alex. The first two books were so good - I wonder what happened to this one? There was enough left unresolved to fill another (small) book!

Alexandra Douglas has just learned the news of her father’s death, but there are even worse things to come. The lawyer gives her the unfortunate news that since her father divorced her mother, he declared her and her invalid sister, bastards. All of his fortune has been left to his current wife. Knowing she needs the money to pay for her sister’s care, Alexandra devises a plan to gain back her portion of the money. Peregrine is in town visiting an old friend, when he stumbles upon the old lady librarian. Sensing that there is more to this woman than her disguise reveals, he makes it his quest to get to know the truth, while hiding his own secrets.

Readers will immediately feel as though they stepped back in time from the very first page. Jane Feather does an excellent job of writing detailed accounts of dialect relevant to the times. Her main character, Alexandra, is forced to go undercover to regain her rightful inheritance, not out of greed but out of need for her sister’s care. Readers learn a lot about her mysterious ways through the delicate manner in which she treats the library books. She is obviously smart enough to deceive the family, but not smart enough to keep away from Peregrine. Readers who have not read the first two books in the trilogy will feel as though they missed some information, but they will quickly understand what previously happened. This storyline focuses on justice and righting wrongs, no matter the consequences.

3.5 Stars! Alot of this story was predictable but there were some surprising parts as well
I was surprised by the action that Perry takes at the end. Very out of character

Since I had read the first two books in this series, I was looking forward to the final book that would tie everything up. I was not disappointed. If you read the first two, you will enjoy this one also as the author creates another bride that fulfills the criteria of the demanding Uncle. Always enjoyed Jane Feather's books.
