I am one of those re-entry fitness freaks. You know the kind that did great in high school and college, then got fat and slow and more recently said enough. Well I did just that a few years back and have been going through a steady progression of physical improvement over the last 5 years. My progress initially had been very good, with lots of easy ground to cover. Over time however nutrition, supplementation and exercise routines became to be more important than just volume. I had been in an ongoing search of a good set of concise and useful guides for nutrition and supplementation, buying the latest magazines, reading online articles etc and nothing really helped nail it for me.
These guides did - The Anabolic Index series (Food and Supplement, and Optimized Nutrition) really put down a simple, and easy to understand/use system of numeric scores for what a particular food or supplement supplied towards the goals of muscle growth (and retention). I learned things reading these guides I never really connected with before. For example did you know water is more important anabolically than some well known supplements and foods ? We all knew you needed to be hydrated - but I never put that in context with other foods. This approach to scoring your food and supplements as well as their timing really opens your eyes up. Plus these are pretty quick reads, and in sort of a reference format so you can easily get to what you need. I highly recommend the set.
