This review refers to the "General Books" edition. I think OCR text recognition is a wonderful thing, although still in it's infancy. This is a print on demand book, made from a possibly bad scan, and it is very clear that little to no effort went into the editing and correcting process.
I understand that Anacalypsis was a colossal effort on the part of Godfrey Higgins. As this book unfolded for me as a reader, I was continually reminded of the maxim, "What the thinker thinks, the prover proves." Start with a prejudice and the data you collect may tend to conform to that.
While the author has quite an axe to grind against the big three monotheistic religions, any facts he might bring to the table were tainted by his uncritical acceptance of 19th century spiritualism. I would recommend a nice sit down with some of Harry Houdini's books that debunk that garbage.
At times the book reminded me of the poor tortured character that Jim Carrey played in the film "23."
