Book Description

January 1987 Snakes Discovery Library
An introduction to the physical characteristics, habits, natural environment and relationship to human beings of the various species of anacondas.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 These clearly illustrated basic introductions will please snake enthusiasts and report writers alike. Each title describes its subjects' general physical and behavioral characteristics, natural habitat, geographical range, senses, hunting and feeding techniques, diet, birth of young, defense mechanisms, and relationship to mankind. Sharp full-page color photos accompany the text on every other page; each title portrays two or more different species , and each photo is labeled with the snake's scientific name as well as its common name. The texts are clearly written, well organized, accurate (a minor error appears in Coral Snakes the scientific name of the Eastern Coral Snake is ``Micrurus fulvius,'' not ``Micrurus fuluius''), and offer more detailed information on particular genera than other books do. A unique feature is the section that focuses on a snake's head and mouthit shows the location and the number of teeth; the location and function of fangs, windpipe, etc. Simon's Meet the Giant Snakes (Walker, 1979) includes material on some of the same species presented in Pythons and Anacondas . However, it emphasizes behavioral characteristics instead of physical characteristics and its illustrations (black -and - white drawings) depict fewer species than the Bargar titles.
