A great deal of progress has been made in the past decade in the development of high-rate anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. There are now more than 500 full-scale facilities. So, in September 1990, a workshop was organized for the development of a paper summarizing the present state of anaerobic wastewater treatment technology. The focus was on the technology of the various reactor systems and their appropriate applications for various waste management situations. The summary paper is presented in this volume along with the presentation and discussion papers on modelling, kinetics, design and operation.
