About the Author

A writer and journalist for four decades, Art Greenwald launched his career covering sports at 16 for the Pittsburgh Press and for his hometown newspaper, the Altoona Mirror. As a Penn State University student, he earned national awards for his feature and humor articles. Greenwald profiled such prominent figures as Howard Cosell, Roger Kahn, David Frost, Marcel Marceau, Betty Friedan, Ellyn Burstyn, Jerry Rubin, Bruce Springsteen, Mike Reid, Edward Villella and Ralph Nader among others. He also worked as a radio newsman, sports director and AM disc jockey. After graduating with a B.A. in journalism, he wrote on the Baltimore Orioles of the late 1970's and subsequently became editor, columnist and feature writer for a Central Pennsylvania weekly. His "Works of Art," column garnered statewide acclaim, a frank and insightful take on significant issues, personalities and news makers-local, regional and national. Greenwald has since written eclectically for a number of niche magazines and newspapers while both a news and feature editor for Florida publications. His humor, profiles, op-ed, Q&A's, features and hard-hitting news accounts on the gay life have appeared in over 40 publications nationwide. The author also holds a Masters of Science Degree with honors in Counseling Psychology from Nova Southeastern University and has served as a substance abuse, mental health and family and couples counselor in Florida. Anal Probe is his first book. Art Greenwald can be reached at articleart@aol.com

How does a “straight” reviewer come to purchase a book packed with vignettes about the gay lifestyle, growing up closeted, and finally coming out in a time when the author’s country was finally preparing to accept, legalize and protect the rights of its LGBT citizens. It helps that author Art Greenwald is a former classmate. It helps that Greenwald let this reviewer know about his book. It also helps if the reviewer was totally clueless about being gay being not so different from being straight.
This reviewer does not like the title or cover “Anal Probe: A Penetrating Peek into the Gay Life” because it belies the seriousness among the comedic vignettes Greenwald presents of his multi-faceted career as a sports writer and a chronicler of the gay community in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ultimately, this is a book more informative for heterosexuals than those living LGBT lives, whom already know all this. Though this reviewer never understood the discomfort, disgust, and even the hatred of heterosexuals toward homosexuals, I never (and probably still don’t) comprehend the attraction of same sex male lovers; yet contrarily can appreciate the affection and love between same sex women: perhaps the contradiction simply derived by a shared appreciation of the female body.
Greenwald is a good writer. He demonstrates with this book a very real talent to both teach and entertain. It is because of both that I recommend this book to all who are young and wakening to their own gay nature, but especially to those confused heterosexuals like me who, through reading “Anal Probe” will close the book with the comfort of realizing that the lifestyle within the LGBT community is really not that different from our own…..
