Editorial Reviews

Grammy Award winning rock and roll legend Joe Walsh returns with Analog Man, his first solo album in two decades to be released on June 5th, 2012 from Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group. Analog Man is both modern and timelessly soulful, packed with Walsh's beloved wit, charm and chops; it delivers an incredibly raw and intimate sound.

"It's been 20 years and I have a lot to say," said Walsh. "These songs come from the heart." Walsh, best known for his powerful guitar licks, joined the Eagles in 1976 and is credited for bringing a harder rock sound to the band with the acclaimed Hotel California, The Long Run and Eagles Live. A singer-songwriter and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Walsh has entertained for more than four decades, not only as a solo artist, but as part of admired bands like The James Gang and Barnstorm.

As a self-proclaimed Analog Man, also the album name and title track, Walsh refers playfully to the new digital age; one in which he has adapted to, but notes in the song, "I am what I am - I'm an Analog Man." Walsh developed the album over the last 10 years, drawing on personal experiences to breathe life into each track. "I just really feel like it's all come together and finally I feel like a complete person and a complete musician," said Walsh. "I think there is some confidence in there that I never had. That's what I was hiding." Walsh credits his wife of four years, Marjorie, for encouraging him to be the man and artist he is today and fondly dedicates this album to her.

The 10-track album was produced by Jeff Lynne and Joe Walsh with Tommy Lee James co-writing some of the tracks. "Lucky That Way," one of Walsh's favorites off the album, speaks to the extraordinary life he's lived, even through the hurdles, and features Ringo Starr, his real life brother-in-law, on drums. The song ironically serves as a mature sequel to Walsh's famed "Life's Been Good" and for Walsh, life is just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST FROM ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS June 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
First of all, in my opinion the production that has been such a topic of interest in many reviews is a non issue...The production on this album is fantastic...I totally believe that this is THE BEST SOLO ALBUM THAT JOE WALSH HAS EVER DONE. I have all the James Gang stuff, all the Eagles stuff, and all of Joe's solo stuff...Joe has had plenty of great songs in the past, but this is a very personal, cohesive, and very guitar oriented album...Most of his solo albums have 2 or 3 great songs and then he just kinda goofs around on the rest of the album....He has done great albums in the past, but for my money, this is HIS MOST COMPLETE WORK EVER...THE LYRICS ARE VERY PERSONAL AND JOE ADDS HIS USUAL WIT AND CHARM ON A COUPLE OF SONGS...His wife really got a fish bone stuck in her throat on a trip to Monte Carlo and they had to fly back to the USA to have it removed. The song he wrote about that is a great guitar jammin', witty Joe Walsh at his best!!!! If you like any of Joe's work, this cd is A MUST HAVE!!!! Get the Deluxe edition because the dvd has a live performance of Analog Man, Wrecking Ball, and Lucky That Way. Plus, there is a booklet inside that Joe gives a track by track description of each song and how they came about...Congrats on your sobriety Joe....Keep living life One Day At A Time!!!! ANALOG MAN IS A FANTASTIC PIECE OF ART!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm doin' better now.. June 5, 2012

Format:Audio CD
As an unabashed Joe fan for over 40 years, I'm not going to be overly analytical nor pretend to be objective. As a fan who's waited 20 years for new Joe, I'm liking what I'm hearing...unique, new approaches from a 64 yo who's been around the world a couple times.

1) Analog Man is lyrically typical Joe. A commentary on society with a nice jam. Turn off the tube, get off yer butt and do something else. Maybe listen to a nice new CD.

2) Wrecking Ball is from a point-of-view from some who's been there. Put down the paraphenalia and get some sleep, you're wasting your time.

3) Lucky That Way is more country than I've heard Joe do before, but fits. We're lucky too.

4) Spanish Dancer has a great middle, need a few more listens to appreciate this fully.

5) Band Played On is Joe's rebuke of society attitudes. He has done environmental awareness songs for a long time, too bad he still needs to. A really rockn' tune, his bro-in-law does a nice job too.

6) Family spreads open his heart for all to witness. Very touching revelations that it's never too late for love and acceptance to come into your life. Crosby n Nash are beautiful back-ups.

7) One Day At A Time could reach a lot of people who need to change the direction of their life. JW agains bears his soul to offer help from someone who's been there.

8) Hi-Roller Baby sounds like a Beach Boys tribute, not my fav so far, but again some great riffs bring the right attitude.

9) Funk 50, loved the other 2, the only thing wrong with this is the length..."Show everybody I'm back" indeed.

10) India is Joe's club music interpretation and it flat out jams. Whodathunk he'd be into dance mixes. Really like this one a lot.

11) Fishbone funks up his wife's blues over a bone stuck her throat...find inspiration wherever it come from, bluesiest song on the CD. Great effects and guitar.

12)But I Try features an old JG song with Little Richard. Wouldn't have known it was LIttle, his voice sounds different. A return to jam band days, with some individuals who know how to do it. This is growing on me.

There's nobody lyrically or guitar-wise quite like Joe AND IT'S BEEN A LONG, LONG LONELY TIME SINCE THERE WAS NEW STUFF, don't care if it's over-compressed or any other technical bs, I'm just glad there's new JOE.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good! May 30, 2012
Format:Vinyl
Well I can't speak much for the overproduction like the other reviewer. Perhaps many albums are starting to go this way unfortunately, none as bad as Coldplay's Mylo Xylo. But the music itself shines, one of Joe's best in many years! The title song could easily become classic Joe Walsh song like many others he's done. I also like Lucky That Way (nice country feel), Band Played On, Family, the highly influenced Jeff Lynn One Day At A Time, he spills out a lot about himself and his new found prospective on life (sobriety, God, living one day at a time) which is almost certainly his experiences in his 12 step program! There are a few clunkers not every song is great but overall I think Jeff did a good job producing the CD and making it a better CD than his last few for sure. Jeff has done a great job for a lot of artists and this although maybe not his best, a GOOD job indeed! At this point in the game it's nice to buy a new Joe Walsh CD that's actually listenable and has some great tracks. inspiration doesn't last forever, sometimes it's lost, and than gets found again! :)
