5.0 out of 5 stars Analog Man's Guide to Vintage Effects, July 14, 2005
This review is from: Analog Man's Guide to Vintage Effects (Paperback)
I've been collecting guitars, amps and effects pedals for 15 years. I also have dozens of books about various types of gear, and I just have to say this is THE BEST book on effects ever written, bar none. And believe me, I have them all. "Analog Man's guide to Vintage Effects" covers everything you could ever want to know about the subject, from history to technical info and everything in between. Tons of great interviews too. And the writing is so well done I literally couldn't put it down. You got to admit, even if your into this stuff, some of those guitar and amp books can be a little stuffy and boring. But this book had me totally mesmerized. It's chock full of photos that are just breathtaking and the whole thing really elevates the "lowly" stompbox to the level of 50's and 60's Fenders and Gibsons. This thing is just jam packed with so much great info. I thought I was pretty knowledgable about effects, but I was learning something new on just about every other page. I would HIGHLY recommend this book not just to people into effects, but to every guitar player, electronic musician, producer, recording engineer, etc., etc. You get the idea. This book is FANTASTIC.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Wish I Could Give This Six Stars, August 29, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Analog Man's Guide to Vintage Effects (Paperback)
I recent bought and have been reading a half-dozen books on guitar effects, in particular guitar pedals. If you take them all (minus this) and combine them, the resultant book would still totally suck compared to this one. This is the one and only one you'll need to buy. Written by Analog Mike of Analog Man, a guitar/pedal shop in Connecticut that's been in business for like 20 years, it is the DEFINITIVE book on guitar pedals and I'm glad its back in print, even thought it's expensive. But trust me, the cost is worth every penny. Wankers like Dave Hunter, who has several books out on the subject, are worthless because Hunter is far from objective - he ends every single section on a pedal or company with a snide, lame Brit-humor put-down unless they're a part of his rig, because he's all about TONE, TONE, TONE, and unlike you and me, he's figured out the RIGHT TONE and everything else sucks. This book, on the other hand, is the polar opposite - it worships & documents any and all devices that could ever be plugged into a guitar. And in great, accurate detail. A labor of love, and it shows. Stop reading this review and just buy it already.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST BOOK ON RARE & UNIQUE EFFECTS, January 20, 2011
This review is from: Analog Man's Guide to Vintage Effects (Paperback)
There isn't anything ANALOGMIKE (or TOM) does that isn't the very BEST; effects, modifications, T-shirts, and even history books on effects! This publication is handsdown, the tops on rare & unique guitar equipment and effects. It's chopped full of amazing facts and history on some of the oddest selections you've never even heard of, but highly regarded in musical circles. If you are looking for a book on "modifications", this isn't it, however, if you are looking a history book on strange effects and tidbits galore, you've come to the right place. I ordered mine straight from the source!
