4.0 out of 5 stars i hate it, but i have to listen to it!
While vacationing with my family to N.M. last month, I saw this CD in a store and decided to grab it. I knew absolutely nothing about it, except that it had a funny ad in XLR8R, and judging from the zany cover art, that the music would resemble Aphex Twin (of whom I'm a big fan) or something IDM. So I splurged and bought it. Well after listening to it several times,...

Ok, by now you know of the Flat Beat single that was the soundtrack for a Levi's commercial in Europe (starring a yellow puppet) , and the director of the commercial also wrote the music. This is the album he released in conjunction to the song.

Well after listening to it several times, I have mixed feelings. It's not really what I expected, but it's something else that's really cool too. I have tried to classify it, but have basically given up as it is nearly unclassifiable. The closest I can get is intelligent tech-industrial trip hop. (HA HA HA!!!) Nearly every track contains a deep, brooding analog growl and a hard, downtempo breakbeat. Although this may seem very unappealing (at first it was!), it grew to be quite a fascinating listening experience. I don't love it, but I feel compelled to listen to it! Especially good tracks are 3, the housey 5, the jazzy 7, the spooky, apocalyptic 8, the snarling 10, the awesome reprise of the title track: 14, and the hit house track 15. I've grown to like the CD, and take it to work often. Also, if you don't like the music, buy it for the hilarious video! It's worth the fifteen bucks!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good, February 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Analog Worms Attack (Audio CD)
I bought this for a laugh, as I enjoyed the Levi's commercials that features the Flat Eric puppet. However, the music is really good - it's mostly minimalist electronic beats, and it managed to stray outside the perfect rhythm most electronica falls into. The music isn't as dramatic or elaborate as, say, the Chemical Brothers (not neccessarily a bad thing), but it manages to carry a fun mood with a minimum of instrumentation. The songs seem to bear replaying well, too, which is uncommon for this style of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, minimalist electronic excellence, November 6, 2003
This review is from: Analog Worms Attack (Audio CD)
Warning: This album is NOT for the average person.

However, if you're into electronica of any kind and enjoy music thats VERY unique, get this album - a treat for your ears and your brain!

The album is very minimalist - tracks are somewhat repetitious within themselfs, but with JUST the right amount of variation throughout to keep it interesting. So well done. The entire feel of the album is, in one word, INTENSE. Some of the tracks are funky, but several others will put you on edge; you'll find yourself sub-consciously grinding your teeth!

All I can say is GET THIS ALBUM! You wont hear anything else like it for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Analog synths and funky beats at their best!, November 8, 2003

Not too many people have heard of Mr. Oizo, aside from, perhaps, "Flat Beat" which aired on MTV for a number of weeks a couple years ago (God forbid anyone actually watch that channel though). After hearing "Flat Beat" I immediately fell in love (and who could resist with that curiously humorous puppet from the video?)

After listening to the album all the way through, I immediately started it over and switched on 'repeat'. This is an album that I can hardly stop listening to. Its funky sounds and curious off-beat tempo adds an almost unsurpassable flavor to the songs.

Although this CD is incredibly amazing (to me) I had to give it a 4 out of 5 because of the repitition of sounds and beats. As much as I love it, anyone out there that isn't into this particular genre may find the repeating beats and sounds annoying about halfway through the album.

If you liked "Flat Beat" and particularly enjoy the electronica genre this album is a definite "must have".

3.0 out of 5 stars It's more than just "Flat Beat", May 22, 2000
This review is from: Analog Worms Attack (Audio CD)
Ok, by now you know of the Flat Beat single that was the soundtrack for a Levi's commercial in Europe (starring a yellow puppet) , and the director of the commercial also wrote the music. This is the album he released in conjunction to the song.

There are generally two critic takes on this album; as a one-note wonder that gets old quickly, or as a delightfully childish take on analog funk. Techno, especially more experimental works, has eye of the beholder syndrome- one man's Aphex Twin is another man's electronic wankery.

Enough preface, this is a good album. Nothing earth shattering, or groundbreaking, and not a necessary purchase, but a lot more listenable (and musically enjoyable) than other revered techno artists. It's centered around one primary theme, raised in Flat Beat but explore more thoroughly over 15 tracks, and that is to create slow, deep, reverberating funk. A chunky, speaker distorting, quirky kind of funk, nothing fast enough to groove to, but just enough to move. Analog squiggles, odd samples, and some DJ scratching round out the songs.

Some tracks like "Last Night a DJ Killed my dog," "Inside the Kidney Machine" succeed by mixing in occasional voice samples and squiggly tones. Other tracks "Bad Start" "The Salad" sound like modern hip hop without an MC (and could use it). There's a few tracks of half-developed ideas or just short weird pieces- "No Day Massacre" is Mr. Oizo explaining to his daughter how he works with Flat Eric the puppet.

Speaking of Flat Eric, you get the video included on this CD, and of course the hit track, which closes the disc. And just to tweak his audience, you'll have to put up with five minutes of silence before the song actually starts, unless you skip to the track.

Those of you wanting some techno with a fresh sound, requiring a playful ear rather than intense decoding, will enjoy this. More casual listeners may be better off tracking down the single.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sellout?...., March 31, 2000
This review is from: Analog Worms Attack (Audio CD)
I saw the video Flat Beat and liked it alot so I got this cd.

1st: I had no idea he did any commercials for Levis. Even still, why is everyone calling him a sellout? I mean the guy likes creating music and thats what he does. Turns out Levis liked it. How different is that then being on a soundtrack for a movie. So forget about anyone saying that he is a sellout.

2nd: This cd is awsome. I am a huge fan of Daft Punk and I am a huge fan of Mr. Oizo now. If you like techno then get this cd.

Tastefully kitsch, chunky, funky and heavy... This album makes me want to bob my head and that makes me happy.

If you like Oizo, check out Wagon Christ's Throbbing Pouch... It's a bit more downtempo and the mood is just *slighty* darker; but it still bobs along a similar vein...

I bought this CD just for the hell of it--I saw the video a few times and thought it was pretty funny. When I brought it home and threw it in my stereo, I was amazed at the pure electronica pouring out of my crappy RCA speakers. This is the kind of electronica you dream about! If you like wacked-out techno or music that sounds like alien abduction, you *must* buy this CD.
