SAT style reasoning for young children.,
By
This review is from: Analogies for Beginners (Paperback)
This book is a good way to get younger children familiar with the reasoning problems found on an SAT test. The problems start out very simple and easy and progress to more difficult problems. The beginning of the book was too simplistic for my nine-year-old, so he started at the mid-point.
The book has questions like: ABC is to CBA like XYZ is to ____. It gives you a list of four possible choices, which in this case the answer would be ZYX. The answers are found on the back cover of the book. I would recommend this book for ages 7-9.

Great for young thinkers!,

I teach 2nd Grade, and this is a great book to get students thinking in ways they don't normally have to. The brain is a pattern-seeker, and this helps them to see relationships, first in figures, then later in words. I recommend it to teachers and parents of children in 1-3 grades.

My son and I have enjoyed doing these analogies. This book is very child friendly and a great way to develop thinking skills.

I bought this book because my kids are learning about analogies in school. This went along nicely with the curriculum.

I purchased this book in order to give my 1st grader more practice in logical thinking skills. As the book cover states, this is most appropriate for grades 1-3, which is children between 6 and 9 years of age (though I have an almost 5-year-old who really loves these). Each page contains a different type of analogy, for example, size comparison, symmetry, antonym/synonym, general to specific. The analogy is laid out as a patterned question ("up is to down as over is to _____") and children select from a set of answers. This book can be used to teach strategies, to challenge kids to think about relationships, to prepare for tests, or just for fun. An answer key is included on the back page.

I've always loved analogies and thought it would be fun to get a book of visual and verbal analogies for my just turned five year old daughter. I ordered this book, it arrived quickly, and has a variety of questions, but we blasted through it very, very quickly and found most of the questions to be too easy for my five year old. She has been tested gifted so her skills may be more like a second or third grader. I have no complaints about these analogies. It was still fun, we just needed more challenging materials.
