Average RDJ fare,

I've heard it said that RDJ just puts out a record when he's low on money. He makes music at home for 8 hours a day, and scratches up a few songs when he wants, and puts them on a record. That's what this Analogue Bubblebath seems like: scrapings. The three songs are all sortakinda thematic, all with titles of animals that more or less describe the sound of the song. "Elephant Song" blares on for 6 1/2 minutes with a beat so repetative and mind-blowingly hardcore you can't doze off in the middle of it, or pull your attention away, for that matter. "Gibbon" is a fun one. I can just imagine a little ape frolicing across the forest floor, hands waving in the air like a little simian raver *g* "Cuckoo" is in the same line as "Analogue Bubblebath" (from the first EP of the series) with a catchy little rhythm, letting RDJ's easier listening side shine through. The roar that starts the album off slows down over it's course from the thunderous Elephant to the sublime "sloth," who we can just imagine hanging upside-down collecting algea during a rainstorm. Lastly is a little soundbit of twisted dialogue from Evil Knievel about his bike or something. Don't ask, I don't know... Overall, the best part of this album is the imagery that goes along with the songs. While most RDJ songs have completely incomprehensible titles, these are given a whole new depth with their animal monikers. I'd only advise purchasing it if you're a hardcore RDJ fan, though.. it's a tad pricey for 4 songs, no matter how fun.

Sometimes it seems like Richard James is challenging his loyal fans to see if they'll keep listening. He throws down a gauntlet of sound, which is usually very hard on the ear, and waits for a reaction. The elephant song at the beginning of this ep is a perfect example. 8 minutes of a pounding beat interspersed with what sounds like an elephant noise. if this was the first thing you heard on a cd would you keep listening? RDJ fans around the world say, "Yes, we will keep listening Richard, because we know what you're capable of." And I must confess I am one of those fans. The second track is a perfect complement to the elephant song. gentle beat with bird sounds (or whatever). The cd finishes with an excerpt from an Evel Knievel interview which is downright hilarious. Conclusion: worth the price of admission for those who know what to expect from Richard James.

If I had two sum this up in two words, those words would be black and white. This album is devoid of all emotion (not that that's a bad thing). If you stuck a computer, a whisper, a chirp, tv static, and a slap together in a blender you'd have this album. It's not RDJ's best though, the "Elephant Song" is one of those songs that keeps you in a perpetual state of wonder, like will this ever end? Has this song even started yet? One more song is just mutlated talking. The 3 other songs are sublime though. This is the first Analogue Bubblebath cd I've bought, and I'll be purchaing the rest, based on the assumtion that the others can compare to the good tracks. It's very original (does RDJ do anything else?), and the perfect album for people who like "regular" rythm-based techno _and_ DnB, I deducted one star because it's too expensive, it's arguably not worth it unless you're a RDJ freak.

The fourth and, as I write final, disk in Aphex Twin's Analogue Bubblebath series manages to concisely highlight the varied realms his prior compositions had expressed. A solid e.p. which would suit the rookie, casual listner, or rabid collector's tastes almost equally.

5 tracks in all but really only some of it is good and some of it isn't. There isn't much of a standout track at all on here although Knievel is pretty hilarious if you listen to it closely ( it's just a dialogue snippet - no music )If you are a dedicated AFX fan then buy this - if not save your money....you'd be better off

A terrifically good release from one of techno's most original and enigmatic artists, this EP is a sort of "Best of early-'90s Aphex Twin". Track 1 is a hardcore dance track with heavily grinding rhythm patterns, reminiscent of u-ziq's early output. My only complaint are these childish, disturbing shrieks throughout the whole song. Track 2 and 4 are candidates for "Selected Ambient Works 1": Lovely, but not trashy melodies and lots of funny nonsense. Track 3 is an acid bath with hammering beats, Track 5 is just 30 seconds long and consists of vocal samples. All in all, this is one of my favorite AFX releases, and it demonstrates the innovative power of Richard in every imaginable way.

These songs are great - however, not quite Richard D. James' best. Also, I'm not quite sure if it is worth eleven dollars.

As usual i find it tough to listen to an afx album all the way through... track 1 starts it off with no fun at all ... but cuckoo is a gem in my opinion... it always has been one of my favorite songs by afx, rarely mentioned.. features rain-forest like atmosphere with many different bird sounds enveloping a signature afx melody, complex and happy and it goes somewhere!
