5.0 out of 5 stars Superb book, but don't order the Kindle version, March 30, 2013
By
This review is from: Analysing Architecture (Paperback)
As a professor who teaches first year architecture students, Simon Unwin's 'Analysing Architecture' is required reading - a primary textbook for our students. Beautifully illustrated with drawings from the author's own notebooks, it also manages to balance legibility with depth: this is a superbly lucid primer on the fundamental principles of architecture.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly, for readers both new to architecture, and experienced architects as well.

A joy to read, a thing of beauty.

*My only proviso would be to avoid buying the Kindle version. The pages of Unwin's book are so carefully laid out that to experience them via an e-reader is to miss out on the full impact. Do yourself a favor, and order the printed version - it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great overview of architecture, February 4, 2013
This review is from: Analysing Architecture (Paperback)
When the very dumbed down '101 things I Learned in Architecture School' succeeds and this great book is ignored, there is something wrong. This book needs to be praised and appreciated. It is superior to the old favorites by Francis Ching, as good as they are, and provides an excellent overview of the subject. There are beautiful and clear line drawings throughout, like Ching's but a little nicer (IMO), and very substantial text that's TRYING TO TEACH YOU SOMETHING. A very sensitive and thorough treatment of a difficult and challenging subject, I highly recommend this and its companion piece 'An Architectural Notebook'. Both are tremendous studio books, and will always have valuable insights to offer when you take them off the shelf. A worthwhile investment in the great subject of architecture, useful beyond the dumb and dumber '101'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!, February 19, 2011

This review is from: Analysing Architecture (Paperback)
I have just gone through the first three chapters of this book and find myself compelled to write this review. I can simply say it is the best and a MUST to everyone in the field of architecture. Students, teachers, and practitioners alike will all find inspirations from this book.

The author has successfully decoded almost every aspect of architectural composition. The price is cheaper considering the knowledge from the contents though it could have been affordable to many had it be less than 25 dollars, preferably 20. The contents are as well very intellectually researched and organized.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great content and organisation., July 2, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Analysing Architecture (Paperback)
In terms of content, this book was just what I need at this time. I found the abstract concepts taken up to be well and clearly explored. A constant theme runs through this third edition by virtue of reading and analysis being positioned as adjuncts to experience. I loved the drawings: to me they were simple, elegant and an essential part of the exposition: nothing redundant here!

In terms of layout, I found the relatively small font challenging. I am persisting though: because of the content.
