Good combination of Stata and data analysis,
By
This review is from: Data Analysis Using Stata (Paperback)
This is a good introduction to both Stata and data analysis. It's a good starting point if you are new to either Stata or data analysis. The book covers entry-level regression and categorical analysis and some Stata programming techniques. You need to read this book before getting into more advanced topics (e.g., panel data, survival analysis, etc.)

This is an excellent reference written in easy to understand language that covers the basics for Stata. Far better than slugging through the expensive manuals. Well laid out with good examples.

Any author of a guide to Stata faces an interesting challenge: teaching a statistical program to a wide audience with a range of statistical background. As an introduction to Stata, this is a very effective text with ample opportunities for hands-on learning. It has tremendously improved my confidence in using Stata and taken my work in class to "A" level. As an introduction to statistics (which, I understand, it DOES NOT aim to be), this is only a minimally effective text. In order to make the technical introduction more valuable for novice statisticians, I think this book would benefit from text boxes that briefly describe statistical methods (e.g. 250 words on regression). Overall, I'm very pleased with this text and recommend it highly.

Before I start the review, I will disclose that one of the authors is my professor.
I used this book last year when I was trying to learn Stata for a class, and found the structure of the book useful. I used many of the examples for the code in my projects, and I was able to easily look up code or topics that I was unfamiliar with but needed for assignments. The only disadvantage to this book, now that I am actually using it for a class, is that the instructions in the assignments at the ends of the chapters are confusing. If an instructor is using this book, I would suggest modifying the activities in the back (because the datasets used for the exercises are from the real-world) or I would create something completely new from the content of the chapter.
