Book Description

January 30, 1997
In this textbook, Cook provides an unusual and stimulating new approach to teaching analytical concepts through the study of style composition. He emphasizes throughout analysis and decision-making within a practical context, drawing on musical examples from eighteenth-century works. Students can use these examples as models to complete compositional assignments provided in a number of subject areas.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`Everything about this book is so clearly thought out and presented that the reviewer need only 'cherry pick' the points from its preface ... The book usefully appends a series of work-sheets. Cook's materials comprise felicitously chosen works by minor composers ... it provides a framework which is free enough to allow the teacher to improvise.' Michael Spitzer, Music and Letters

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, June 10, 2008
This review is from: Analysis through Composition: Principles of the Classical Style (Spiral-bound)
What better way to learn classical style than immersion by analyzing and composing? This is the best book I've ever seen for putting it all together while keeping it interesting and challenging for students.

For many years I've only read these book reviews, but "Analysis through Composition" inspired me to write my first with a rave.
