This review is from: Analytical Microbiology Methods (Hardcover)
The book was edited by Alvin Fox, Stephen L. Morgan, Lennart Larsson, and Goran Odham. There are 16 chapters by numerous other additional authors covering applications of chromatography and mass spectrometry to analytical microbiology. Chapters include: (1) Analytical microbiology: a perspective (Fox, Gilbart, Morgan); (2) GC and MS for analytical microbiology (Ueda, Morgan, Fox); (3) Chemotaxonomy of Coryneform organisms (Cummins); (4) Use of cellular fatty acids for identification of microorganisms (Moss); (5) Profiling and detection of bacterial carbohydrates (Fox, Gilbart, Morgan); (6) Analysis of bacterial amino acids (Fox, Ueda, Morgan); (7) Headspace analysis by GC-MS of volatile organic compounds associated with Clostridium cultures (Rimbault); (8) Identification of pathogenic bacteria by headspace GC (Seifert, Giercke-Sygusch, Boehnel); (9) High performance chromatographic and spectroscopic analyses of mycobacterial waxes and glycolipids (Minnikin, Dobson, Bolton, Parlett, and Mallet); (10) Structural elucidation of lipopolysaccharides and their Lipid A component (Lindner, Zahringer, Rietschel, and Seydel); (11) Structural determination of unsaturated long chain fatty acids from mycobacteria by capillary GC and collision activation dissociation MS (Prome, Aurelle, Couderc, Prome, Savagnac, and Treilhou); (12) Pyrolysis GC/MS profiling of chemical markers for microorganisms (Morgan, Watt, Ueda, and Fox); (13) Rapid characterization of microorganisms by Curie-point pyrolysis in combination with short capillary GC and ion trap MS (Snyder, McClennen, and Meuzelaar); (14) Ultrasensitive determination of lipid biomarkers by GC and MS in clinical and ecological microbiology (Larsson and Odham); (15) GC and MS techniques for the diagnosis of disseminated Candidiasis (Roboz); (16) Use of lipid biomarkers in environmental samples (Tunlid and White). The material is based on presentations at the First International Symposium on Analytical Chemistry & Microbiology, held at the University of South C! arolina, Columbia, SC, in June 1989. Although specific techniques may be dated now (1998), the overall philosophy and approaches described in this book make it a valuable resource for the analytical chemist or microbiologist interested in analytical microbiology.
