Book Description

This advanced grammar text encourages students to think critically about grammar and exposes them to a variety of linguistic theories as it prepares them to become K-12 English teachers. Designed to support and assist students in learning about the structure of the English language, this textbook provides students with sound pedagogical grammar instruction while drawing upon traditional, structural, and transformational grammatical theory. Unlike similar texts, Analyzing English Grammar speaks directly to students by providing clear explanations. It then challenges them to be conscious of their own learning processes by incorporating a variety of strategies that extend beyond memorization and into critical thinking and analysis.

5.0 out of 5 stars An In-depth Analysis of English Grammar!, May 24, 2002
This is a very useful tool especially for prospective English teachers. It discusses various complex grammatical points and sheds light on syntax. A word of warning: this is not a traditional grammar book! However, if you intend to specialize in English grammar, this is the ultimate reference for you. Teachers should be able to incorporate certain aspects into their teaching! If you seek to master the English grammar, buy this book this instant. Nonetheless, if you need an introductory book to English grammar, do not buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book For Understanding English Grammer, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Analyzing English Grammar, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)
I purchased this book for an upper level undergraduate English grammar course and I thought it was fantastic. I went into the class uncertain of the difference between an adjective and an adverb. I came out knowing that and a whole lot more.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a broad understanding of the fundamentals of English grammar. The authors build on the material they cover from chapter to chapter. They provide useful summaries and "rules of thumb" that really help the student organize the information into learnable chunks.

This book is excellent for understanding linguistics and the depth of the English language. If you are looking for a traditional grammar book (prescriptive grammar) this is not for you. This book is descriptive grammar which describes the variations of spoken English language. In addition to showing the traditional Reed-Kellogg form of diagramming it also includes the newer phrase structure trees. I had a hard time understanding this at first but it is becoming more clear. I am a senior in college and this is the textbook we are using in class. It is one to keep if you are going to be an English major or English teacher.
