essential jazz piano playing, October 28, 2000
This review is from: Anamule Dance (Audio CD)
At the time of these recordings,Ferdinand Joseph LaMenthe Morton was 53;he died 3 years later in California, dreaming of things he neved did.THis "creole" from New Orleans, born in 1885,said he was the creator of jazz and blues.Certainly he was wrong, but the right thing is that he was one of the greatest piano players of all times. These recordings, made for the Library of Congress, are poor in quality as far as the sound is concerned, but if you're not too maniac about sound quality,if you're getting used listening to old dusty stuff, you'll sure treasure these pieces.Let Mr Jelly Lord tell you about New Orleans, listen to his stories, and don't believe him. You'll sure have a great time. This is marvelous piano playing, and it ranks at the same level as Duke,Bud,Fats,Monk,Jimmy Yancey or Herman(who's he?Herman Chittison;try him one of these days!)
