A Breath Of Fresh Air,
By Troy (LA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Anarchists of Good Taste (Audio CD)
I will start by saying that one of my favorite bands is Mr. Bungle. Now, a lot of people say that Dog Fashion Disco is simply a "Heavier Mr. Bungle". But I do not see it that way. Its obvious that Dog Fashion Disco is heavily influenced by Bungle, but did not "rip them off". Its very difficult to copy what an amazing experimental band like Bungle did. Now, to the music. Every member of Dog Fashion Disco is very talented at his instrument. The creativity is obviously there. "Vertigo Motel" motel begins with their usual musical interpretation of death, but unexpectedly jams your ears into a blender of different musical instruments that you may have never heard from the likes of a metal band. The lyrics can even be interesting at times. Whether ranting about how vocalist Todd Smith is "coming to California to ... you, coming to ... and murder your family", or is warning you not to "fall asleep or we'll mutilate your genitals". Its pleasing to see this slew of bands influenced by the likes of Mike Patton making it big in the underground metal scene. Dog Fashion Disco is definitely a breath of fresh air in this currently unoriginal, tasteless, talentless world of metal.

thease guys play in my area alot, and i have yet to miss a show. they are one of my favorite contemporary bands. The sounds they make are so unique, they are the first i have heard to do what they do. It is a blend of creepy circus music, insane and hauntingly melodic vocals and hardcore yet sometimes playful riffs. they are sick in such a funny playfull way, you cant help but love everything they do! definatly pick up this cd if your tired of the same old hardcore riffs and hardcore formula bands. the only band that i can think of that comes close to thease guys is, well, noone now that i try to think of it. if you like heavy hardcore, you'll love thease guys, but dont take my word for it, visit your local cd store or online purchase machine [we love them] and pick them up today!

Dog Fashion Disco may have some similaities to Mr. Bungle, but who cares. Ten years down the line Bungle and DFD may be hailed as the early pioneers of this genre of music. It's about time somebody followed in Mike Patton's footsteps. DFD isn't as much like Bungle as everyone says, but possibly the closest to being influenced by Bungle along with Tub Ring. This is a great, heavy, melodic, experimental, hardcore, loungy, euphoric album. I only gave Anarchists of Good Taste 4 stars because I like Committed to a Bright Future slightly more. Final words: Don't be so stuck on Mike Patton(Which most of his albums deserve 6 stars) where you can't appreciate DFD because they are a great group, as this is a good album.

Wow. Nothing short of amazing. These guys craft wonderfully eccentric, intelligent, aggresive music. A truly welcome change from the bubblepopmetal we've been inundated with. It's also a welcome change when a band makes the music itself their gimmick, instead of masks and jumpsuits, etc... The music here is beautifully crafted. Violently heavy at some points, eerily subtle at others, I cannot say enough good things about this band. Try "Vertigo Motel" and then attempt to convince yourself it isn't the most original song you've heard in years. The live show is a gem as well. Dressing like yuppies and clapping along percussively to your own songs earns brownie points in my book simply for creativity. If you like Mr. Bungle's early material (from the self titled days) then you will more than likely enjoy this record.

All you have to listen to is the second track - "9 to 5 at the Morgue", right around 2:30 minutes in, absolutely genius. This CD is one of those amazing perfect CD's, no filler, all tracks just incredible, like Floyd's Dark Side... They also throw one of the best shows i've ever seen. Been to 200+ shows (underground and mainstream), DFD is one of the best.

You can like or deslike Dog Fashion Disco... but you can't ignore them... they have a new sound... something creepy... but very very rare at the same time... Dog Fashion Disco are something else... they are using alot of instruments that you usually won't hear in this kind of music... but they are mix it all toghter to create an amazing sound... this album is crazy... so many sounds and instrumants that you just say to yourself "WOW" and listen to it again and again...

Some really wicked stuff here. This is the kind of music you might expect to hear if you went to a purgatory circus. It's dark, creepy, loud, cruel and strange, but always entertaining. The lyrics are wildly non-sensical and even morbid at times ("Don't fall asleep or we'll mutilate your genitals"? Ha! Twisted...) but mix well with the pound of the guitar riffs. It gets a little crazy at times but I can see a lot of potential in the future of Dog Fashion Disco. You can see the band evolving allready with their follow-up album "Commited to a Bright Future" which I may like even a bit more than "Anarchists". Close though. Favorite songs from this CD are "Leper Friend", "Headless" and "A Corpse is a Corpse". Check this stuff out if you enjoy the likes of Nothingface, Lollipop Lust Kill or just general heavy metal/industrial tunes.

Finally something metal has needed,

ANARCHISTS OF GOOD TASTE is an amazing album by DOD FASHION DISCO from indie label Spitfire. DOG FASHION DISCO is a cross between System of a Down and Mr. Bungle with their own unique sound. On first listen it is easy to classify them as a Patton like sound, but to those who put them in that category, I reccomend taking another listen. DFD offers everything you could ever want in a cd, especially with their circus like vocals and thier powerful music. Serj from System of a Down even appears on a track. DOG FASHION DISCO should be in everyones collection. They are a new voice in a dying metal scene. DFD is just the type of band to revive it.

If you are shopping for a crazy... CD, GET THIS! I have been into Dog Fashion Disco for a long time, even before "Anarchists of Good Taste" came out, because they are local to my area. I go to school (Sherwood High School) with their new guitarist's brother, and their guitarist used to give me guitar lessons at the small "Wood N Strings" shop in Olney, Maryland before he joined the band! Im really glad to see that they are getting somewhere with their music and catching the eye of people all over the place. I defenetly reccomend buying this CD, because it is great and very bizzare and interesting all at once. I cant wait untill they drop by in DC again to play a show, because I went to see them a while ago at the 9:30 Club (an all-ages club in the Baltimore/Washinton are that hosts some GREAT shows) with the band Nothingface (also a great band, who also were sprung from the Baltimore/Washington area), and they put on a really kick A$$ show which was very intense. Great stage theatrics to. Check em out!

Mike Patton is God and Dog Fashion Disco are his subjects. Let's get that out of the way, so we can review this material. It is good, and it is very interesting. To totally disregard this album simply because it is heavily influenced by a genius is to dismiss a quality album. In other words, get over it. Would you rather another boy band or a band who imitated a talentless, Limp Biscuit band? This is not a radio friendly band, they are creative and passionate, and they have put together a very good album.
