She was born when her mother, Pat Erb, was in her 6th month of pregnancy. Ana weighed just over a kilogram (2lb 4oz), and could fit in her father's hand. What happens to such a tiny baby? Will she grow up like any other kid? What are the challenges facing the family?
Karin Wells produced Ana's Story, a documentary that chronicles the ethical and moral dilemmas facing the medical profession and the family when treating extremely tiny babies. At what point is treatment withdrawn? How do parents deal with 72 days in the neo natal intensive care unit?
Ana went through years of surgery, doctors visits and all sorts of physio- and occupational therapy.
When we finished Ana's Story Ana had just had her third birthday. Her parents were packing to move out of their two-story house, into a bungalow. They knew they needed a house that was wheelchair accessible. A new and very different life had just begun.
Ana Grows Up picks up the story as Ana, her mother, two of Ana's friends and their mother go camping in Fitzroy Harbor Provincial Park. This was their summer vacation and producer Karin Wells went with them.
