I read this in the 1970's and was greatly impressed, because I was a child during WWII and often wondered about how and why some personalities were so inhumane. As the years have gone by and our children have established families of their own, I have frequently referred to this book and finally bought one for our son, now a criminal defense lawyer. The writing is lucid, direct, and helpful.

I read this book over 30 years ago and many years later realized that it had changed my life. What I took from this book was the danger of being one of the herd. To this day the concepts in this book are a driving force in my life, I see situations in the framework of individuality vs the going along to get along mentality, and believe whole heartedly that it is the mob mentality that is the true destructive force in our world.

For those interested in human nature, which should be all people, it is a must read. As a side note, those interested in human nature might want to read the negative comments and low rating for this book, then read those contributors other reviews. Fascinating that there were two reviewers that gave this one star, and also gave many one star/negative reviews for other products (movies, games, books etc) but gave high marks for violent video games. Hmmmmmmm.

Fromm's volume "The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness" is the most complete and thorough research on the topic of aggression. It validates the theory that malignant aggression or destructiveness is part of human character, one of the passions we possess like love, ambition, and greed. His book takes the reader on a phenomenal journey that enlightens the mind and unearths the deepest passion in the human heart. Fromm explores with surgical precision the various types of human aggression and the history behind it. His fabulous research is unequivocally the most prolific and exhaustive on this topic. This text is a must read. It will help you discover and understand yourself as well as the world that you live in.

Good book, but outdated, it was good for 60's -70's. Fromm, makes many attacks on other important people like Freud, etc. Not everything he writes all there as well.

On one page, "tigher control of rioters" is necrophilic. 3 pages later, "excited [...] by riot" is necrophilic. Fromm's book is ok, but not great. I've given it one star because out of the 528 pages I'd say maybe enough material to fill 20 or so pages is useful. The rest is either uninteresting or illogical or woolly or badly-written. A minor point, but Fromm really struggles with 'that' and 'which' which, IMO, is pretty amateurish and distracting. He gets it wrong 80-90% of the time in The Forgotten Language, too, so it's probably safe to say he does so in all his writing - didn't he have an editor?. Anyway, like I say, some ok material and thinking here (e.g. the idea of character), but its weaknesses (e.g. spending a boringly enormous part of the start of the book slagging off other writers) and fallacious logic let it down. I really wanted to like this book but feeling like I was being lectured by someone with an inflated opinion of his own intellect and abilities just alienated me.

As I was reading it, I kept thinking, "No, way. What a crap way to evaluate Man's tendency to do evil." Then I got to the concrete example analysis. And the analysis was spot on. So much was pulled in from historically accurate sources (sources that I was biased in favor of, at least) to back it up that by the end of it, I was wondering where the dissonance was occurring. When I work up the stomach to re-read it, I'll see if the the theory is more attractive the second time around.
