Editorial Reviews

Review

We actively encourage all members of the Romana s Pilates® instructor network, as well as trainees in our instructor training program, to read this book. We believe it s a great source of information to heighten one s understanding and awareness of how the body moves. --Daria Pace, Instructor Trainer, Romana s Pilates®

This work is truly by one who understands movement. Calais-Germain shows her respect for the logic of human anatomy and biomechanics, and reveals her experience in dance. The text is a necessity for all dance teachers and students in their pursuit of further knowledge of the art form. --Moira McCormack, MSc, MCSP, SRP, Lecturer in Anatomy, Royal Academy of Dance

Our students love it! The consistent sequencing of information about each body region helps students develop a thinking process about that part, i.e., 'This is how it's put together, so this is how it works.' --Pat Archer, M.S., L.M.P., A.T.C., Director of Education, Brenneke School of Massage, Seattle

About the Author

Blandine Calais-Germain is the celebrated author of Anatomy of Movement, Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, The Female Pelvis: Anatomy and Exercises, and Anatomy of Breathing. Her lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, led to an interest in other physical disciplines and to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body. She studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris, and subsequently developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement, which she teaches at workshops in France to students from all over the world.

This book is recommended for many yoga teacher trainings and is what purchased it for. I've taken collage level anatomy courses in the past, so am not completely new to the concepts and terminology. The book is great at keeping things simple and limiting the information to what is needed for movement. It also has good drawings littered throughout the pages. However, it can be difficult to get used to the way it is written. At times the writing seems random and could use a little more detail to help you get a better understanding. Sometimes the phrasing doesn't really make sense and it will often only give one example. The easiest way I found to work with this book and really understand what was going on was to pair it with an anatomy coloring book. So it's good for giving you basic knowledge but you'll probably need something else if you really want to understand it.

The book has simple and clear illustrations and concise text. The book seems best suited to readers who already have some experience studying anatomy. It then serves as a great refresher, touchstone, and unique re-integrator of points of reference that have been forgotten, mis-understood or misplaced in the memory.
I found the point of view elegant and the organization of the information flowed in a useful way that I found simple to follow and understand. This also makes it easier to bookmark and refer to.
I'm very glad to have this book as part of my working collection of reference books and study guides.

I highly recommend this book for massage therapists, physical therapists, athletes and whomever wants to increase their awareness of how the muscles work.

This book isolates muscles and muscle groups and uses very clear muscle drawings and short explanations to show muscle action and synergy. I'm a licensed massage therapist and I use this book to decipher clients' complaints. (I bought this copy so I can loan one to clients and always have one for myself.)

I have no experience in the study of anatomy and read this for yoga immersion training. I was amazed and delighted to learn about the human body. It's a miracle... while a bit overwhelming for someone like me, it was fascinating and I am hopeful that in the years to come, this additional knowledge will help me to understand movement. I feel like I am starting to understand some things, although it is a huge, seemingly endless area of study...

Well illustrated. Sometimes we had difficulty identifying things with great precision, but rarely and that was not our purpose in choosing this book.
