4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written...Easy to Follow...Superb Textbook
I am in college, currently taking my 2nd term of Anatomy and Physiology as a pre-requisite for nursing school. This textbook has been fundamental to my understanding of this course, both for this term and last term (and I plan to use it next term, as well).

The clincher is that this is not the required text we are using for my class. A friend just happened...

3.0 out of 5 stars Professor's perspective
Saladin is a pretty good anatomy and physiology text but it contains a number of errors in fact in some areas (e.g., renal), is not well balanced in some areas (e.g., cardiovascular and gastrointestinal) and the pictures are often incorrect (e.g., illustrating epithelial cells as a cube). As a physiologist it appears to me that the physiology is weaker than the anatomy...

3.0 out of 5 stars Professor's perspective, April 13, 2001
Saladin is a pretty good anatomy and physiology text but it contains a number of errors in fact in some areas (e.g., renal), is not well balanced in some areas (e.g., cardiovascular and gastrointestinal) and the pictures are often incorrect (e.g., illustrating epithelial cells as a cube). As a physiologist it appears to me that the physiology is weaker than the anatomy. Many A&P texts contain the same errors, which suggests that these works are not entirely original. I've concluded that I need separate anatomy and physiology texts for my A&P course so that the students will have the benefit of true expertise in each subject area.

3.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful With This Edition, July 17, 2005
This review is from: Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function with OLC Bind-in Card (Hardcover)
The first half of the text is excellent; graphics and reader-friendly verbiage are well done. Though I am obligated to say Saladin's treatment of the autonomic system needs extensive supplementation if your future academic program includes a course in Pharamacology.

The second half (roughly equating to second semester) is a disaster. I hope the next edition makes the significant repairs needed, especially with endocrine physiology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written...Easy to Follow...Superb Textbook, February 28, 2008

A friend just happened to give me this Saladin book when she heard I was taking A&P and so I am using it as a companion text. Little did I know how much I would come to rely on this book; I really feel lucky that it was given to me.

The text my school uses is Martini's Fundamentals of Anatomy Physiology, which, to be fair, is also a very good text book. But there is something about the way Saladin writes and the way he organizes his thoughts about the subject matter that makes it so much easier for me to understand.Often, I will read my required textbook and be totally lost, not "getting it." This is especially true when I am researching information to answer essay questions for my exams. Then, I will read the same topic in Saladin's book and a light bulb will go off -- it will finally all make sense. I've even thought about writing a personal letter to the author to express my gratitude.

I highly recommend this textbook to anyone who wants a clear and easy to understand approach to anatomy & physiology. I feel Anatomy & Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function, by Kenneth S. Saladin, has been essential to my comprehension of anatomy & physiology; I'm not exaggerating when I say that being able to count on this book has helped me to keep making A's in this class!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to the human body, June 6, 1999
By A Customer
This text is a must for anyone planning to pursue a career in medicine or the allied health sciences. Clearly written, with the best illustrations I have seen anywhere. Med schools should have their students read this book in place of the many turgid and incomprehensible basic science texts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A+++++, June 6, 2006

This review is from: Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function with OLC Bind-in Card (Hardcover)
I am beginning medical sch in the fall and needed a solid summer review book. This text is great. The first ~5 chapters are mostly review concerning organization of the body and various physiologic functions that covers most of the highlights from undergrad. The next section is a great introduction to histology, followed by the body systems, pointing out all bones, joints, muscles, blood vessels, etc. that will be covered again in Gross Anatomy, all while presenting a coherent and easy-to-read accompanying text. In addition the illustrations are WONDERFUL. No sacrifice of details ocurred here.
One of the major contributions of this text is the online study materials. Saladin has provided a plethora of study guides, review questions and exams, all with answers, relevant weblinks (the LUMEN histology slides and practicals are a must), crossword puzzles, and perhaps most helpful, labeling exercises, to help get a firm grasp of the material. Gross is a hard hard hard class, and unless some review is done prior, it's almost impossible to learn and retain all of the material required. This is an excellent summer review tool!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome Book!, September 23, 2005
This review is from: Anatomy and Physiology (Paperback)
I had this book when I took A&P a couple of years ago and I just loved it, especially the interactive CD-Rom. My daighter was 2 at the time and loved to watch the animated portion with heart sounds. She also loved to look at the skeleton in the book, running around shouting out names of her bones and pointing at them. :o) I had to sell it afterwards (needed the money) so when I started nursing school I kept thinking ,"I really wish I had kept that book as a reference!" SO I looked online and found the paperback version to purchase. It doesn't have the CD with it, but is still an excellent book. The illustrations are wonderful as well as realistic. All in all I would highly recommend this book to students and people interested in the human body alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Anatomy and Physiology Students, October 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function with OLC Bind-in Card (Hardcover)
This was our assigned text for our college Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 classes. This book is quite descriptive and prepares any pre-med or pre-healthcare student for passing their A and P classes. I like how the muscles and nervous system are presented. Knowing the difference between the masseter and frontalis muslces is an example on how this book makes learning this subject easier. I also highly used the following which is on amazon:Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Patrick Leonardi
Also, Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology by Patrick Leonardi was another helpful book that made test preparation much easier. These last 3 books made studying easier because it showed me the type of questions that were asked on my A and P college exams. My study group and I used these 4 books and we all got A's in our classes.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very difficult read for the average person., October 26, 2006
This review is from: Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function with OLC Bind-in Card (Hardcover)
This book is a very descriptive book on anatomy and the author covers the human body in great detail and provides many examples and good illustrations. Here's why I only gave it 2 stars. This book is NOT an easy read by any means. It is truly college level reading material. I am a student majoring in Nursing and I have to tell you that the author does not do an adequate job of simplifying the material, which gets VERY complex in later chapters. Frequently throughout the text when describing something, say an organ, he will give you every last ounce of info on that organ but truly fail to tell you the BASIC FUNCTION that it performs. He uses a page of text when a paragraph will do. I frequenlty had to have a dictionary by my side reading this. Many of my classmates shared the same opinion. He does not "Dumb it down" so to speak for an average person who is reading this. Frederick Martini's version of Anatomy is much better. He really simplifies the complex concepts and his way of writing is much more decipherable and READER FRIENDLY than Saladin's. Many college students I know have struggled mightily reading through Saladin's technical writing and wish they had a simpler book to read. I probably would have done much better in my anatomy classes had they issued us a better textbook than this complex, indecipherable encyclopedia.

Comprehensible book and very well-organized.There are many clear,well-labeled images throughout the book.I often referred to them to study for lab practicals. The book also refers you to an online website that contains quizzes, activities(labeling, crossword puzzles, video quizzes),and other resources to help you in your anatomy and physiology course. But make sure you get the most updated version.
