Book Description

April 28, 2009
Created by Joseph Pilates during the early 20th century, Pilates is used by millions today to improve their physical and mental well-being. Much of its appeal lies in its simple, low-impact approach, which is ideal for injury prevention, rehabilitation, and general physical health. Based on a series of precise movements and the employment of equipment such as rubber balls and exercise bands, Pilates emphasizes concentration, control, alignment, core stability, and proper breathing.

The Anatomy of Pilates shows what actually happens to the body’s muscles and joints during Pilates exercises. Each two-page spread features detailed anatomical illustrations of an exercise (with muscle actions highlighted in red), a detailed description of the exercise and its objectives, the particular breathing pattern to be used, a list of the specific muscles being worked, visualization techniques, complementary exercises, and more. The Anatomy of Pilates is an accessible, authoritative guide for current and prospective teachers of Pilates, practitioners at all skill levels, physical therapists, and other health professionals.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Reading this book made me want to utilize Pilates more in my exercise routine… [it] is organized in a way that the reader can easily navigate the basics of Pilates—Introduction, Posture and Movement, Applications, and Classical Pilates Exercises… The Anatomy of Pilates is very informative and because the book is only around 150 pages, it isn't a daunting read. The full-color illustrations are the icing on the cake, making the book more easily digested.”

1.0 out of 5 stars Too general, November 28, 2010
This review is from: The Anatomy of Pilates (Paperback)
I'm very disappointed of this book! The drawings don't distinguish between muscle functions, every muscle somewhat involved in the movement is highlighted without further explanation, whether it's contracting or lengthening. With lists like that the question arises what the criteria of selection of a certain muscle group for an exercise was? Hip flexors not highlighted in Teaser? Ahem.

I've only briefly looked at the chapters and can already say that there are too many statements for my taste that are so general, that they are plain wrong: "Stabilizers are made up of slow-twitch fibres..."

This book is not worth the money and seems to be thrown together at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't say enough good things about this book!, August 19, 2009
This review is from: The Anatomy of Pilates (Paperback)
Although this book is written for the health professional, it is a fantastic resource for the Pilates beginner as well. The text is well organized, thorough, clear and easy to understand. The illustrations of how to do the individual exercises are some of the most helpful I have seen in an exercise book.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Anatomy of Pilates (Paperback)
Love this book! Excellent resource guide for new and experienced Pilates teachers. The chapter (2) on Posture and Movement assessment is worth the price of the book alone. I have purchased more expensive Pilates books that were not nearly as valuable to me. Highly recommend!!
