Biography

Sometimes the best way to deal with a break-up is to write a batch of great songs about it, turn up the amplifiers and just rock out.

Think of enduring classics – from Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyville to Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine to Beck’s Sea Change – and how they achieved musical catharsis from the crumbling walls and crossbeams of a relationship gone bad.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a good thing!, June 15, 2002
I bought this cd right after seeing them in concert on the electric youth tour. i already had the self titled cd but the songs in concert were mostly off of this cd. i figured "hey i really like those songs, i need to get this" i've had it for about 7 months now and i still listen to it constantly. here is the breakdown:

1: Kick-Off.....the great intro to a great cd..4 out of 5
2: Pressing On......the catchy tune will have you singing it for days and the rock driven guitar is great.......4 out of 5
3: Sadie Hawkins Dance.......One of the reasons I even thought about buying this cd, i love the oh, oh, oh!......5 out of 5
4: Down in Flames......great song all around, nothing really sticks out about it though......4 out of 5
5: Maybe Its Maybeline.....another expected refernece to name brand or pop culture, it was needed though, especially in this great song.....4 out of 5
6: Breakdown.....joke about the relient k car turned strong message....5 out of 5
7: Those Words Are Not Enough.....i had never heard this song before i bought the cd but the heartfelt lyrics and good tune made this song quickly become one of my favorites....5 out of 5
8: For the Moments I feel Faint....by far the best song on the album, once again i'd never heard this song, but i loved this song so much, i still do! a great run at a beautiful accoustic song and matt thiessen's vocals ring gorgeously in this song.....5 out of 5
9: I'm Lion-O....my mom makes fun of this song all the time because we have no earthly idea what in the heck it means, but hey! it's still a great song!.....5 out of 5
10: What Have You Been Doing Lately?.....How true is this song? Watching our friends fall from God. A good song all together and i love the guy in the background(ri li!)....5 out of 5
11: May the Horse be With You....funny funny song! very catchy as well!........5 out of 5
12: My Way or the Highway: Good lyrics but nothing really sticks out about the song but it is still good!....4 out of 5
13: The Rest Is Up to You: wonderful lyrics, one of the best written songs on the album i believe, very clever and yet good message.....5 out of 5
14: Failure to Excommunicate....I don't know how many time i just skipped over this song when i listened to the album but one day i just listened to it and know it is my second favorite track! i love it! it's differnet in the way it sounds a little darker than the other tracks....5 out of 5
15: Less Is More...Good, Good, Good, Good, Bravo! to relient k for this amazing piano driven songs that has wonderful bgv's and a very meaningful message!....5 out of 5
Bonus at the end of Less is More.....Skittles and Combos is hilarious and a little hard to understand so turn it up and laugh your head off!

well i hope that this helped and i highly recommend this album no matter what type of music you like. and weather you you think this is punk or not, it's not important, it is just good music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh. WOW., March 3, 2003
By A Customer
I bought this CD last month after listening to the song samples, and decided I liked them. The song samples are NOTHING compared to the CD.

Kick-off- 4.5 stars - "Here's the kickoff/hope you're not sick of/Relient K/and all the songs we play." Interesting song, nice drums at the start.

Pressing on- 5 stars - "I think we're going somewhere/we're onto something good here/there's only one thing left to do..." AWESOME guitar at the start of this song, I could listen to it all day. Mostly about perseverance. Fast song.

Sadie Hawkins Dance- 5 stars - "Sittin' in the back of my next class nappin'/got up, gave a speech then bowed to the clapping..." A more 'secular' song, still great though. Almost has a click-click-click feel to it on the chorus. It changes speeds a LOT, something I loved.

Down in Flames- 4.8 stars - "Christians/we're all afraid of fire/ we prefer to suck on pacifiers..." Great song, definitely Christian. It criticizes the Christian society for fighting amongst ourselves, while we "eat our own/the bones and all" Another fast song. The chorus is a little bit repetitive, however.

Maybe it's Maybeline- 4 stars - "People make mistakes/find that everything breaks/and it always is the same/gotta find someone to blame..." Another good song, medium speed, about how it's never OUR fault, we're always blaming someone else. Doesn't ALWAYS seem to make sense, though. "Maybe it's maybeline"? (Maybeline=may-bee-leen)

Breakdown- 4.5 stars - "Over lousy excuse for a car/one mile to go but I can't push that far/ I think I've had enough..." Another song about how life seems so unfair, another really good song. The meat of the cd is early on and towards the middle, really.

Those Words Are Not Enough- 4.3 stars - "Understand/it's so hard to tell you/cause you already know..." Another pretty good song, I like it, but it seems a little.. off beat at times.

For The Moments I Feel Faint- 5 stars - "Never underestimate my Jesus/you're telling me that there's no hope, I'm telling you you're wrong..." The slowest song on the CD, and one of the best. It has a more acoustic sound to it, no heavy fast rock here.

Lion Wilson- 4.5 stars - I have NO idea what's with this song, no words, but it's nice still!

I'm Lion-O- 5 stars - "I am the greatest thundercat of them all/I'm Lion-O!" I love this song! It doesn't always make sense, but it's nice and fast, and the guitar riffs are good. Hope you like Thundercats.

What Have You Been Doing Lately- 4.8 stars - "Pardon me while I throw up/I guess some people never grow up..." A song about how people fall away from Christ, uses some really nice combinations for a great sound. Didn't always sound consistent, somehow.

May The Horse Be With You- 4.3 stars - "We're gonna graze all of our days/until they take us away and turn us into glue/Like Mr Ed always said..." lol! Hilarious song, from the point of view of a horse. The chorus is really repetitive, unfortunately, other than that I love it!

My Way Or The Highway...- 5 stars - "By the wayside we fell/He said it's My way or the highway to hell/it's your decision, choose it well..." Choose Christ's way or the highway to hell, no other options. Another AWESOME song, my favorite on the track.

Breakfast at Timpani's- 3.5 stars - "I just wanted to thank you for this amazing breakfast..." Whaaa? This was a weird thing. No music. Obviously a parody of "Breakfast at Tiffany's", but...

The Rest Is Up To You- 3 stars - I must be frank, this wasn't a great song, IMO. It just seemed off kilter.

Failure To Excommunicate- 5 stars - "That coffin created for creative thought/it's disgusting/his priorities..." Another favorite of mine. A really darkish song, mainly about how society pushes out 'different' people.

Less Is More- 4.5 stars - "Jesus I pray/take all my mistakes/throw them away/destroy them for my sake..." Another slow song for the ending, sounds really nice. Listen for the bonus way later!

Overall- 4.9 stars - AWESOME CD. I LOVE IT. I suggest you go get it today, and especially their new one when it comes out real soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a GREAT cd!!, June 9, 2002
Before I bought this CD I downloaded a few of the songs and decided I really liked it. So I went out and bought it, brought it home and listened to it. I love every track on this CD. My favorite song is Failure to Excommunicate and Sadie Hawkins Dance. The lyrics for most of the songs are very catchy and funny. My sister and I listened to this CD all weekend and loved it. A very worthwhile buy. I haven't heard Relient K's first cd, so i can't compare it to this one, but it's very upbeat punk. The lyrics remind me of the Newsboys, but the beat reminds me of MxPx. GO BUY THIS CD!!
