Anaz-Voohri (Ancient Enemy)

Zack Duncan awoke to loud rumbling that shook the house, and hearing Ashley, his baby sister scream he raced for her room. They lived in California so an earthquake could be possible but the sound, like a loud siren, hurt his ears. If anything happened to Ash while his parents were away he knew that he would be blamed. Zack made his way to Ashley's room stumbling in the dark and stood frozen in her doorway. A tall alien stood over his sister and Zack screamed for it to stop, but the alien just continued to probe Ashley and he was powerless to stop it. The alien glided to the window taking Ashley with it and they stepped into a light beam and rose to the sky! Once they were in the beam, Zack was released by the force that froze him and he dashed out the window pleading to not take her and the alien zapped him with some sort of stun gun. Hours later Zack awoke and called 9-1-1 and his parents only to be told by the emergency dispatcher that other young girls were taken! Zack had made a vow to keep Ashley safe and some how he would get her back.

Tia Vargas was good at West Point, so good that she excelled above the rest, since her brother was killed in the Twin Towers bombing she vowed that she would make the terrorist pay. Tia knew that she was different as her body healed itself in no time and she never tired but may be that was she grew up in Venezula jungle so may be it was her Amazon blood. Tia was called to the general's office and assigned to train new recruits; she was disappointed that she had not been shipped overseas and tried not to show it.

This is just one of those fun, futuristic stories of aliens invading earth, boy meeting girl, girl turning out to be not who she seems...you know. That kind of story. It's fun. It kicks butt. It definitely kept my attention.

Having said that, I do feel like it could have had more focus on the romance aspect. Also there were a LOT of unanswered questions about the Anaz-Voohri. However, this is the firs installment of a series, so I expect some of those questions will be answered in the future.

It was definitely enjoyable enough that I purchased the second book in the series as soon as I finished reading.

Let me list the reasons:
Uses too many schlock cliches - the deformed humanoid alien, destructive hate for humankind, genetic experiments, hybrids, beams of light transporting comatose victims, you name it...
Zack and Tia's motivations are believable, and some parts of their careers and romance are written excellently, but Tia's abandonment of the injured Zack, his lack of resentment, the way they reunite without any recriminations - just don't ring true.
Why does the clever hybrid doctor work both for and against the aliens? Why heal Zack?
There are also many other unexplained inconsistencies.
I think the author is trying to compress too epic a story into this and just skips what doesn't really interest her. It makes for a disjointed narrative, the plot gets lost and it's no longer possible to identify with the characters.
I'm giving 2 stars rather than just one because it managed to keep me reading till the end, but I'm deleting this and not getting the rest of the series.
