The Last Golden Ancerl,
By Michael B. Richman (Portland, Maine USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Ancerl Gold Edition 42: LISZT Les Preludes / BARTA Viola Concerto / SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concerto No. 1 (Audio CD)
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon will know of my love for Supraphon's "Gold Edition" Karel Ancerl CDs. Well I recently picked up the final six volumes in this collection (vols 37-42) and I have to say they are as delightful as the first 36 sets. Volume 42 features Ancerl and the Czech PO performing Liszt's "Les Preludes," Lubor Barta's Viola Concerto (with soloist Jaroslav Karlovsky), and Shostakovich's 1st Cello Concerto (with soloist Milos Sadlo), recorded in 1964, 1961 and 1968 respectively. It is only fitting that this collection come to a close with a work from each of the three genres for which Ancerl was best known -- the romantic period, the music of his native country, and the works of 20th Century composers. All three performances are first rate and captured in excellent stereo sound. In all, this title is an appropriate conclusion to a great series and a great conductor.
