This review is from: Ancestor, The (Paperback)
If you want a mystical book that's not a total fantasy, read this book. In the story, a dead grandmother talks to a woman in her dreams. When the woman, Maria Antonia, realizes that her grandmother is only reaching out to her because she has something important to tell her, she has to let go of her secular belief system and allow her grandmother's spirit to guide her on a physicial and spiritual journal. The book goes back and forth between the reality we all know and another reality where spirits talk and book characters become guides in the tangible world. The book goes back several generations and includes myths of Maria Antonia's heritage, a very unusual matriarchial line. Maria Antonia is a writer and her lover a painter, so the book also explores the life of artists. Just when you think you know what's going on, there's a twist in the plot that makes you stay up to read the book and be late for work in the morning.
