The beginning of Ray's career as a Latin Jazz artist., September 25, 2011
This review is from: Ancestral Messages (Audio CD)
This 1993 release marked the beginning of Ray's career in the Latin Jazz genre as he would not record any more Salsa studio albums after leaving the Fania label in 1992. In many ways, this CD's musical contents pay tribute to both Ray's Salsa and Jazz roots and foreshadow his accomplishments in the Latin Jazz field. By itself, the absolutely thrilling "A Song For Chano" would justify buying this CD but other key songs are "Killer Joe", "My Latin New York" and the title track. This Grammy-nominated CD embodies the two elements that typify Latin Jazz: the smoothness, elegance and sophistication of Jazz coupled with the intensity and fire of traditional Afro-Cuban and Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms. Like his fellow Salsa luminaries Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barretto enjoyed many successes in the Latin Jazz genre and "Ancestral Messages" set the prototype for his subsequent releases.
