Wonderful harmonies, mello & soothing,
By Catvision (Fort Collins, CO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ancestral Voices (Audio CD)
This is a great blend of Nakai's Native American melodies on flute and Eaton on guitar and several string instruments he designed and built. The result is a melodius interplay of harmonies and rhythms in a variety of instrumental sounds and some chants. Very calming, soothing -- great for relaxation or meditation.

Melodies that you carry with you,

Nakai produces a romantic, healing, while vaguely haunting music that gently transports you back to a time when music was more than just entertainment. Nakai emulates the traditional music of his Navajo-Ute in a way that is both touching and mystic. Be prepared to be taken on a journey where you will be introduced to the feelings an impressions that Nakai himself experiences. He will show you through his music what the world around his means to him, and he will instill that awe of life in you.Nakai doesn't fall into the trap of giving the musical tourist exactly what he expects. There is no chanting or jingling bells, no corny sound effects or war cries. Instead he simply taps into that inner peace that we all look for. Perhaps that's the reason so many people have come to appreciate his music. The universal understanding of, and need for, peace and insight.

THE ESSENCE OF DREAMS,
By Unlucky Frank (Lalaland, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ancestral Voices (Audio CD)
By far, Nakai's best recording. This is the most haunting and beautiful CD I own. Wonderful for meditation, painting, relaxing, or drifting off to sleep. What dreams this man conjures. This far surpasses anything in the often incoherent genre of New Age Music and should not be classified as such. Nakai is in a realm all his own.On the rare occasion this CD leaves the player beside my bed, it's usually in the player in my painting studio. BUY IT NOW!...

love this CD,
This review is from: Ancestral Voices (Audio CD)
This is by far one of my favorites CDs. Carlos Nakai and William Eaton blend so well together on Native American flute and guitar - both are masters of their instruments. It's mellow enough for meditation but interesting enough to listen to with earphones and get into the flow, the rhythm and the harmonies of the music. The only problem I have with this CD is - my dog reacts to the flute playing - gets "a little freaked out" so I can't play it around her. She might think it's the coyotes that we sometimes hear around here in central NC. Anyhow, this is one CD that I could never get tired of listening to.

you won't be disappointed,

Ancestral Voices is easily Nakai's best collaboration, and Eaton is a first-class musician in his own right. It is one of those rare productions where every track is first-rate and you just can't make up your mind which is "best", although the last track (Black Lodge singers) is one of those tracks where you feel like OMG! first time you hear it. Of all the albums in the Native American genre that I have, this is the one I return to the most often. Get it, you will NOT be disappointed.

A spiritual journey into the Native past,
This review is from: Ancestral Voices (Audio CD)
This is my all-time favourite CD to put on if I cannot sleep; or if I've suffered a meltdown of any kind; or if I just need to cleanse my spirit. It was highly recommended to me by a Native American friend, and that person chose the exact right work.
I challenge anyone not to feel better after hearing the soul-mending music of Mr Nakai, but this album is exquisite in its production, design, and execution. I really am transported whenever I put it on; the days don't seem so long ago when a young warrior played his flute outside the tepee of his intended bride, and the lifestyle of that time seems so much the answer to the maddening pace of today. I've never been at all certain that the Europeans brought a more attractive world with them; the way of life of the Native Americans has always felt more real to me, and this album brings that world to life in my mind. Flute isn't all there is here, either.Mr Nakai is aided superbly by the liquid, lilting guitar of William Eaton, which is so soothing and lovely it will bring anyone's blood pressure down immediately. And the final cut on the album is a haunting, lyrical drum circle, with raised plaintive Indian singing that will raise the hairs on the back of your neck in a good way. Sad, beautiful, it always makes me want to cry. If you enjoy Native American music, this album is the perfect addition to your library.

The wonderful collaborations between these musicians are among my favorite recordings of the new century - and this one - may be the best yet. I love this soothing, deeply introspective, deep, harmonious, earth reverencing music. Nakai has never sounded better. A masterpiece by any standard. Verges onto the primordial quiet.

Great for classroom use!,

This review is from: Ancestral Voices (Audio CD)
The calming, peaceful sounds of the Native American flute are perfect for use in the classroom! My high school students don't know what to think of it at first, but after a while, they begin to develop an appreciation for it. The soothing music helps them relax and focus their minds. I have several Nakai CDs and I play a different one everyday. This CD is an excellent addition to my collection!
