4.0 out of 5 stars Just be careful
I bought three of these canisters in the 1 gallon size and another one in a smaller size. I use them on my countertop for two kinds of flour and two kinds of sugar. I searched all over to find a canister that could hold an entire 5 lb. bag of flour, and the 1 gallon size does. These canisters look lovely on my counter.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do NOT use for food due to danger of GLASS CHIPS!
I bought a set of these with one and two gallon containers. They do look good, and "seemed" like they would be great. However, anything stored in them IS SUBJECT to getting GLASS CHIPS in it with use. DO NOT STORE FOOD IN THESE!

I used these for cereals, rice, etc. Any little bump and the rims will chip glass into your food! You may not notice this until...

This review is from: Anchor Hocking 1-Gallon Heritage Hill Jar with Glass Lid (Kitchen)

Pros

Holds an entire bag of flour or sugar
Attractive
Mouth is wide enough to easily scoop with a measuring cup
Glass, not plastic (I don't like storing food in plastic if I can help it)
Inexpensive

Cons

No gasket; not airtight
Highly breakable

I would not have thought it was possible to break these very easily, as they seem to be very thick, but I was removing the lid from one of them, knocked it against the mouth of the canister, and sent tiny shards of glass spraying all over my counter and into my sugar. As it was impossible to tell which were grains of sugar and which were pieces of glass, I had to dump the whole thing. I know this was my mistake and not the fault of the product (it IS glass after all, which I am fully aware of) but just be extra careful not to knock the lid against the jar. I really wish they had plastic or rubber gaskets to make them airtight. I use up my flour and sugar quite quickly, but I can see how it might be an issue for someone who takes more than 2-3 weeks to use a full bag of flour. You could always lay a piece of plastic wrap over the opening before fitting the lid into place to keep things fresh.

You may not notice this until too late!

This happened unnoticed and I made rice one day (stored in one of these) and my family found glass chips in their rice!

It's just not worth it! I've used other ones that actually have a little rubber seal on the rim (These do not) and liked them until I saw another chip...

Now I'm using 100% stainless steel containers, with the stainless steel lids (with rubber seals) that have glass tops (like some cookware has) and never have to worry about my family's safety again.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice design, good price, May 9, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Anchor Hocking 1-Gallon Heritage Hill Jar with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
I've purchased 8 of these jars total, in the 2, 1 and 0.5 gallon sizes.

Pros:
1. Good, simple glass design.... stable, pretty hard to tip when filled with ingredient...... wide mouth that makes it easy for reaching in and scooping out
2. Glass material is so much more satisfying than plastic kitchen containers, which seem to be the norm
3. Cheap price, especially compared with other glass jars available from places like Sur la Table
4. Sturdy; unlike other reviewer I've never had a problem with these jars breaking in the past 2 years I've owned them. The glass is relatively thick and the lids are in fact sturdy and have survived being dropped a few times...

Cons:
1. Like another reviewer has noted, some of them come with cosmetic defects like bubbles, or an imbalanced lip
2. There's no seal/gasket.... they're useless for storing, for example, brown sugar

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, September 6, 2008

Would have been better if it had a rubber gasket for the lid and it also had a rather large air bubble in the glass. For the price though and with free shipping I'm not complaining about it.

It's a jar. It has a lid that fits on it. It opens, and it closes. It sits on the kitchen counter. It does everything I expected it to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more spills in the pantry!, April 19, 2008
This review is from: Anchor Hocking 1-Gallon Heritage Hill Jar with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
This is great! I was sick and tired of cleaning up spilled popcorn, rice, oatmeal, etc. in my pantry when they were stored in the bags from the store. I needed a solution, and I didn't want ugly, temporary, plastic or rubber containers that last only as long as their lids stay around. These glass containers work beautifully and they are attractive enough to keep out on the counter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks nice, but not safe for use in active food preparation, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Anchor Hocking 1-Gallon Heritage Hill Jar with Glass Lid (Kitchen)
My wife use the 1-gallon jar to store dough in. It worked well until it shattered. And it shattered with only a small bump while she placed it in the sink to wash it. Lucky it was in the sink, because it shattered into many pieces. It is really a safety hazard. I wish the product were a bit more expensive and better made, since the size is perfect. NOT SAFE FOR DAILY USE !

In response to a query - here is what we are using now: Snapware 23 Cup MODS Food Container. It is BPA free, large enough to reach into to slice out dough, yet small enough to fit into the refrigerator.

The perfect cookie jar. In fact, we bought a few more and now keep rice and flour in them too. I sweat this makes cookies taste better.

Being able to fit any size measure into this canister is wonderful - just scoop and go - no need to tilt to reach inside - lack of retaining lip for lid or gasket is a minor blip in the design but overall we love them
