It came packed well and with no problems.

I'd wanted a jar with some kind of rubberized gasket around the lid to seal it well, but this doesn't have that.

I am using them to brew homemade kombucha (fermented tea) and they are just perfect for that.

I bought three of these canisters in the 1 gallon size and another one in a smaller size. I use them on my countertop for two kinds of flour and two kinds of sugar. I searched all over to find a canister that could hold an entire 5 lb. bag of flour, and the 1 gallon size does. These canisters look lovely on my counter.

Pros

Holds an entire bag of flour or sugar
Attractive
Mouth is wide enough to easily scoop with a measuring cup
Glass, not plastic (I don't like storing food in plastic if I can help it)
Inexpensive

Cons

No gasket; not airtight
Highly breakable

I would not have thought it was possible to break these very easily, as they seem to be very thick, but I was removing the lid from one of them, knocked it against the mouth of the canister, and sent tiny shards of glass spraying all over my counter and into my sugar. As it was impossible to tell which were grains of sugar and which were pieces of glass, I had to dump the whole thing. I know this was my mistake and not the fault of the product (it IS glass after all, which I am fully aware of) but just be extra careful not to knock the lid against the jar. I really wish they had plastic or rubber gaskets to make them airtight. I use up my flour and sugar quite quickly, but I can see how it might be an issue for someone who takes more than 2-3 weeks to use a full bag of flour. You could always lay a piece of plastic wrap over the opening before fitting the lid into place to keep things fresh.

I bought a set of these with one and two gallon containers. They do look good, and "seemed" like they would be great. However, anything stored in them IS SUBJECT to getting GLASS CHIPS in it with use. DO NOT STORE FOOD IN THESE!

I used these for cereals, rice, etc. Any little bump and the rims will chip glass into your food! You may not notice this until too late!

This happened unnoticed and I made rice one day (stored in one of these) and my family found glass chips in their rice!

It's just not worth it! I've used other ones that actually have a little rubber seal on the rim (These do not) and liked them until I saw another chip...

Now I'm using 100% stainless steel containers, with the stainless steel lids (with rubber seals) that have glass tops (like some cookware has) and never have to worry about my family's safety again.

I'm surprised to see all of the reviews that caution against using these containers for food. I've had at least one, but usually several of these glass storage jars in various sizes on my counter tops for fifteen or twenty years without a single tragic outcome. I've dropped the lids on counters and rarely tile floors and never had one break. No chips on the rims, no broken shards skidding across the kitchen floor. Is a trouble free jar really rare these days?

This style of jar has been a quintessential fixture in candy stores for what, maybe a hundred years? If they are good enough to hold candy for children for dozens of generations I'm not sure how we can't manage to store a couple of pounds of sugar or flour in here without fear of causing irreparable harm to our families. Then again I never wore a seat belt or a bike helmet as a kid and somehow I'm still here.

Guess I'm living fast and loose with Anchor Hocking.

I bought this jar to replace a broken one from Ikea that held marshmallows and other treats. The broken one had a lid that had a plastic/rubber seal that kept air from getting in - this jar's lid does not have any seal and just more or less sits loosely on the top of the jar. I'm using it, but I wouldn't buy it again for the purpose I wanted.

It's a jar. It has a lid that fits on it. It opens, and it closes. It sits on the kitchen counter. It does everything I expected it to do.

Yes, my parents and grandparents used this type of jar. So did the local druggists. They had a simple fix for the whole "bad seal chipping lid" issue, they simply stuck a cork liner on top of the jar, and sat the lid on the cork. I'm sure this product would work fine. http://www.amazon.com/Con-Tact-04F-C6421-06-18-Inch-4-Feet-Adhesive/dp/B000WEPD6U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347024614&sr=8-1&keywords=cork+shelf+liner or just search amazon for cork shelf liner. Stick it on and cut with a razor knife or xacto.

I've purchased 8 of these jars total, in the 2, 1 and 0.5 gallon sizes.

Pros:
1. Good, simple glass design.... stable, pretty hard to tip when filled with ingredient...... wide mouth that makes it easy for reaching in and scooping out
2. Glass material is so much more satisfying than plastic kitchen containers, which seem to be the norm
3. Cheap price, especially compared with other glass jars available from places like Sur la Table
4. Sturdy; unlike other reviewer I've never had a problem with these jars breaking in the past 2 years I've owned them. The glass is relatively thick and the lids are in fact sturdy and have survived being dropped a few times...

Cons:
1. Like another reviewer has noted, some of them come with cosmetic defects like bubbles, or an imbalanced lip
2. There's no seal/gasket.... they're useless for storing, for example, brown sugar
