After listening to the album "Anchor" by Mindy Gledhill I concluded that she is perhaps one of the most under-appreciated geniuses of combining music and poetry of our day. This album is an absolute delight for far more reasons than surface entertainment: this is a work tender, emotional, intelligent, and touchingly auto-biographical.
Perhaps the greatest brilliance displayed by this album is the way it so perfectly complements and completes her last album, "Feather in the Wind" (2007). This previous album, beautiful as it was, left the listener impressed, yet longing for a few more upbeat tracks to balance the deep sense of longing portrayed by that album on the whole. This new addition is the answer to that album and almost seems to have a set of "sister" tracks to many in that album beyond the obvious, perfectly pair-able title tracks. Indeed, for "Long Lost Child" and "If I Had No Songs" in the last album she gives us thematically and elementally related yet musically contrasting tracks such as "Hourglass" and "This is My Song" respectively. The unfulfilled and questioning conclusion of "Hard" has now been fulfilled and answered with perhaps her most perfect track to date, "All About Your Heart." 3 years ago, "Feather in the Wind" left her audience eagerly awaiting more, and though the wait has been a little long, she has certainly proved that it's been worth it. If you have not heard that last album, I also highly recommend it; I hardly think either is complete without the other. Audiences have been blessed to see Ms. Gledhill from "both sides now."
That said, I eagerly await the opportunity to see where she will go next. While this album certainly seemed to complete the last, I pray that doesn't mark a completion of her career. Her amazing talent for tender yet intelligent poetry in her lyrics demand a critical attention they have yet to see granted (she's also gifted with a grace for adding a touch of humor to her words on occasion--"All the Pennies" will give you a smile, and "Crazy Love" might make you laugh out loud!). As always, her voice is phenomenal, and she knows how to appropriately change her tone for each track--a growth in her performance factor over "Feather in the Wind." I find her fully comparable with and even greater than many of her contemporary pop rock artists and hope to see another album.
