I've read 1491, by the same author. It's an excellent book. If you haven't read it, READ IT. But, based on the Tables of Contents, which are identical, this book and 1491 are the same book. The exact page counts do differ, and I haven't done a page-for-page comparison, but the Tables of Contents are the same. I hope this helps.

I bought this book simply because it was cheap. It turned out to be an outstanding value. I learned more form it than form anything I've read in a couple of years. the author synthesizes research relating to the population and level of cultural sophistication of the Americas before European contact. He makes a powerful case that there were many more people here than once thought, that their cultures were more developed, older and had a more profound influence on the natural ecology than we ever considered. This was an outstanding read. I most highly commend it.

After reading 1491, I assumed that this book would have contained some different information! Much to my surprise, when I started to leaf through this copy, it was almost exactly the same as 1491!, What a great way to sell more books! Just rename an old one and sell it as something new!!!! My level of respect for this author has diminished greatly. I don't think I will ever buy another publication by this author on ethical grounds!!!!! Crass marketing strikes again!!!!!
