I purchased this catalogue on the strength of previous Royal Academy publications. This volume is an overview of artworks on view in the Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen. The museum was established by Carl and Helge Jacobsen; their fortune being made from the famous Carlsberg brewery.
The exhibits are a rather disparate lot; divided into sections such as Ancient Egypt, Cypriot antiquities, Etruria, Greco-Roman Sculpture, Danish painting and sculpture plus a sizable selection of French nineteenth century works. I found the Danish section pleasant but conventional and tepid. The ancient works, an area about which I profess little expertise, seem to be of a high standard. There is the usual parade of French artists; names such as Corot, David, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Gauguin and Rodin. Many of these paintings are of high quality but very few have any particular wow factor. The color illustrations are good.
