I just revisited this recording of modern arrangements by trumpeter Phil Snedecor of familiar music ("Greensleeves", "The Wexford Carol") from the pre-Baroque and Baroque periods. It's a delicious program highlighted by brass and organ arrangements of Respighi's take on Ancient Airs and Dances, and a Christmas Oratorio by Bach. The music is wonderfully played by The Washington Symphonic Brass, and expertly engineered. Just read the notes on the astounding effort taken just to pull this off. The album is Christmas-themed, but like Collegeum Aureum's album of Baroque Christmas concertos may be enjoyed throughout the year. Don't be put off by the little-known label. This is terrific stuff!
