Return to Spiritlands, retitled., December 31, 2001
This review is from: Ancient Canyons (Audio CD)
"Return to Spiritlands" is a great CD. So great, in fact, that it has, apparently, been re-released under a new title: "Ancient Canyons." If you already have "Return" -- you don't need this CD. If you don't have "Return" -- you do need this CD. Admittedly, some of it is a little synth-heavy for me, but the overall excellence and sophistication of sound is worth the flirtation with newage.

A truly breath taking collection, September 4, 2001
This review is from: Ancient Canyons (Audio CD)
I have all of John's recordings that are available, and find some of his works, beautiful, some ok, and some, oh well! This CD is a collection of his best works. John has his ears and heart connected and his best music reflects his deep passion. If you only purchase one CD of this fine artist, make it this one. You will not be disappointment.

Native Flute with an attitude.., July 31, 2001
This review is from: Ancient Canyons (Audio CD)
OK, the second cut alone, "Night on Hoskininni Plateau", is worth the price of admission for this CD. My guess is that you will find this cut appearing over and over again on compilation CDs of the best of Native American music in the near future. Have a listen to that one, and if it interests you, then I can assure you that you will enjoy the rest of the CD as well. John Huling creates really fine Native American flute music, but it is not generally of the "solo flute with environmental sounds" category. Mr. Huling takes full advantage of other instrumentation to highlight the flute, especially making wise use of percussion instruments to complement the quality of the woodwind sounds. This CD, I believe, is the best of his efforts, like a fine flute, he is aging well with time. Give this CD a try, especially if you enjoy contemporary, Native-inspired music.
