1.0 out of 5 stars The Modern Celts Came From George Buchanan's 16th Century Propaganda., March 2, 2006
This review is from: Ancient Celts (Paperback)
The color plates are exquisite, they get 5 stars. The text is one more sad attempt to rewrite history. The author stretches the bounds of reality to the laughable extreme. Ex: claiming that the Galatians and the Scots under Wellington were in any way related or came from the same gene pool is nonsense. As is the unsubstantiated claim that this half mythic race has the longest military tradition in history. If he meant that they have lost more battles & wars than any other people, ancient to modern he may have a point? The one interesting thing mentioned was the Roman finds in eastern Ireland.

The Celts were never a singular people or culture, the term itself is a linguistic one. The recent debunking of the long held belief about Q and P Celtic languages is proof that the very title should be in question. Edward Lhuyd ceated the term Celtic Languages in 1707AD. Read page 11 of John Collis' book "Celts: Origins, Myths, & Reinventions."

The Greeks and Romans owe the Celts little, and both at different times pulverized their not so mighty Warriors into SUBMISSION! Caeser did not surrender, Vercingetorix did! I was hoping for history, I got fiction and fairy tale revisionism. Don't waste your $.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images, too bad about the rest..., January 18, 2004
This review is from: Ancient Celts (Paperback)
When will Newark learn that gorgeous Mcbride illustrations do not mean he can write utter rubbish... So many errors it's actualy funny at times. At other times it's just sad to see nice art get wasted on a terrible book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truth Be Told., July 31, 2006
This review is from: Ancient Celts (Paperback)
Reviewer Truthful History said it all. This is very light and bad revisionism. Unworthy of a single star, the pictures get 4 stars, the text negative 4.
