Book Description

September 20, 2005
The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture does what very few of today's students of the Bible could do for themselves. With the aid of computer technology, the vast array of writings from the church fathers—including much that is available only in the ancient languages—have been combed for their comment on Scripture. From these results, scholars with a deep knowledge of the fathers and a heart for the church have hand selected material for each volume, shaping, annotating and introducing it to today's readers. Each portion of commentary has been chosen for its salient insight, its rhetorical power and its faithful representation of the consensual exegesis of the early church. Included here from series editor Tom C. Oden is the full text of twelve commentaries from the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture:
  • Genesis 1—11
  • Genesis 12—50
  • Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
  • The Twelve Prophets
  • Matthew 1—13
  • Matthew 14—28
  • Mark
  • Luke
  • Romans
  • 1-2 Corinthians
  • Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians
  • Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, 1-2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon
Arranged canonically, each volume allows the living voices of the church in its formative centuries to speak as they engage the sacred page of Scripture. Now even more accessible in digital format, this series will prove an uncommon companion for theological interpretation, spiritual reading and wholesome teaching and preaching. 4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid set, December 22, 2009
This review is from: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture CD-ROM, Volume 1 (CD-ROM)
While it is definitely valuable to own this set on CD-ROM, this set does have it's flaws. First off, the translations are about the same as the 39 volume set of Early Church Fathers that you can get from LOGOS or various other locations. The Church Fathers set is also available for FREE on the internet. But the way this set is organized makes it a whole lot more convenient and easy to find a certain passage within a book of the Bible and the commentary on it. Another problem is that sometimes notes are seemingly attached that seem to place a bias that leans more towards Protestantism. The early Fathers were priests, bishops, etc. of the early Ancient Church that was very Catholic. The early Fathers didn't hold to the belief of FAITH ALONE or any other novel doctrine that would later arise. Even though the true text of the Fathers appears unaltered, we can definitely see some bias here--and that is the reason it loses a star--in an attempt to place certain quotes in a fashion as if they supported a certain protestant belief.

The one star knock off is not without it's basis either. At times this set will exclude certain Church Father pieces that are very Catholic. Interested in reading the commentary on John 6 and the strong Eucharistic view the Fathers had on it? Good luck finding the full view here. Interested in reading Revelation 12 and seeing how the earliest interpretation was a Marian one--and viewing a good amount of other Fathers that interpreted the woman as Mary? You'll be lucky to find a FEW in this set(not in this CD rom set itself but in the ACC edition of Revelation itself).

Nevertheless, I do recommend purchasing this. If you are interested in the Early Church--the Fathers are not misquoted and all this requires is you hunt down the full quotes and their context. If you own the LOGOS CATHOLIC EDITION of the Church Fathers, then you should get this. In fact, if you own any edition of the Church Fathers, you can easily do searches and find out the context in which the Father is speaking in the ACC. It's well worth a buy!
