Book Description

September 17, 2010 The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture
The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture does what very few of today's students of the Bible could do for themselves. With the aid of computer technology, the vast array of writings from the church fathers—including many that are available only in the ancient languages—have been combed for their comment on Scripture. From these results, scholars with a deep knowledge of the fathers and a heart for the church have hand selected material for each volume, shaping, annotating and introducing it to today's readers. Each portion of commentary has been chosen for its salient insight, its rhetorical power and its faithful representation of the consensual exegesis of the early church. Included on this CD-ROM from series editor Tom C. Oden is the full text of all twenty-nine commentaries from the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. Arranged canonically, each volume allows the living voices of the church in its formative centuries to speak as they engage the sacred page of Scripture. Now even more accessible in digital format, this series will prove an uncommon companion for theological interpretation, spiritual reading, and wholesome teaching and preaching. Inside you'll find
  • all twenty-nine volumes of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture
  • commentary by the church fathers on all sixty-six books of the Bible and the Apocrypha
  • introductions by world-renowned patristics scholars
  • a money-saving package
  • the new revolutionary Libronix Digital Library System (TM)
  • a free KJV Bible
  • unlockable versions of the Bible, including NASB, NRSV, NLT, RSV and The Message
  • The Essential IVP Reference Collection (unlockable for a fee)
  • a complete user's manual on the CD

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Contemporary Christians would do well to draw the hermeneutical circle broadly enough to include not only cross-cultural voices from around the world but also the voices to be found in the Ancient Christian Commentary series. This is an excellent sermon-preparation resource for pastors." (Christian Century, )

"This software contains a wealth of information for the classic Bible scholar." (Ravonne A. Green, American Reference Books Annual )

"The Ancient Christian Commentary fills a long overdue need for scholars and students of the church fathers. . . . Such information will prove immeasurable to those of us who have felt inundated by contemporary interpreters and novel theories of the biblical text. We welcome some new insight from the ancient authors in the early centuries of the church." (H. Wayne House, Distinguished Research Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies, Faith Evangelical Seminary )

"In the desert of biblical scholarship that tries to deconstruct or get behind the texts, the patristic commentators let the pure, clear waters of Christian faith flow from its scriptural source. Preachers, teachers and Bible students of every sort will want to drink deeply from the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture." (Richard John Neuhaus, past president of Religion and Public Life and former editor-in-chief of First Things )

"The fathers of the ancient church were enabled, by the grace of God, to interpret the divine Scriptures in a way that integrates spirituality and erudition, liturgy and dogma, and generally all aspects of our faith which embrace the totality of our life. To allow the fathers to speak to us again, in our contemporary situation, . . . provides a corrective to the fragmentation of the faith which results from the particularization and overspecialization that exists today in the study of the holy Bible and of sacred theology." (Fr. George Dragas, Holy Cross Seminary )

"This new but old Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture takes us out of the small, closed-minded world in which much modern biblical scholarship is done into an earlier time marked by a Christian seriousness, by robust inquiry and by believing faith. This commentary is a fresh breeze blowing in our empty, postmodern world." (David F. Wells, Distinguished Senior Research Professor, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary )

"Few publishing projects have encouraged me as much as the recently announced Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture with Dr. Thomas Oden serving as general editor. . . . How is it that so many of us who are dedicated to serve the Lord received seminary educations which omitted familiarity with such incredible students of the Scriptures as St. John Chrysostom, St. Athanasius the Great and St. John of Damascus? I am greatly anticipating the publication of this commentary." (Fr. Peter E. Gillquist, director of the Department of Missions and Evangelism, Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America )

"The initial cry of the Reformation was ad fontes--back to the sources! The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture is a marvelous tool for the recovery of biblical wisdom in today's church. Not just another scholarly project, the ACCS is a major source for the renewal of preaching, theology and Christian devotion." (Timothy George, dean, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University )

"Modern church members often do not realize that they are participants in the vast company of the communion of saints that reaches far back into the past and that will continue into the future, until the kingdom comes. This commentary should help them begin to see themselves as participants in that redeemed community." (Elizabeth Achtemeier, the late Union Professor Emerita of Bible and Homiletics, Union Theological Seminary )

"Contemporary pastors do not stand alone. We are not the first generation of preachers to wrestle with the challenges of communicating the gospel. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture puts us in conversation with our colleagues from the past, that great cloud of witnesses who preceded us in this vocation. This commentary enables us to receive their deep spiritual insights, their encouragement and guidance for present-day interpretation and preaching of the Word. What a wonderful addition to any pastor's library!" (William H. Willimon, bishop, North Alabama Conference, The United Methodist Church )

"Here is a nonpareil series which reclaims the Bible as the book of the church, by making accessible to earnest readers of the twenty-first century the classrooms of Clement of Alexandria and Didymus the Blind, the study and lecture hall of Origen, the cathedrae of Chrysostom and Augustine, and the scriptorium of Jerome in his Bethlehem monastery. (George Lawless, Augustinian Patristic Institute and Gregorian University, Rome )

"The conspectus of patristic exposition that this series offers has been badly needed for several centuries, and the whole Christian world should unite to thank those who are undertaking to fill the gap. For the ongoing ecumenical conversation, and the accurate appreciation of early Christian thought, and the current hermeneutical debate as well, the Ancient Christian Commentary will prove itself to be a really indispensable resource." (J. I. Packer, Board of Governors Professor of Theology, Regent College )

"We are pleased to witness publication of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. It is most beneficial for us to learn how the ancient Christians, especially the saints of the church who proved through their lives their devotion to God and his Word, interpreted Scripture. Let us heed the witness of those who have gone before us in the faith." (Metropolitan Theodosius, former primate, Orthodox Church in America )

"Chronological snobbery--the assumption that our ancestors working without benefit of computers have nothing to teach us--is exposed as nonsense by this magnificent series. Surfeited with knowledge but starved of wisdom, many of us are more than ready to sit at table with our ancestors and listen to their holy conversations on Scripture. I know I am." (Eugene H. Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College )

"Composed in the style of the great medieval catenae, this new anthology of patristic commentary on Holy Scripture, conveniently arranged by chapter and verse, will be a valuable resource for prayer, study and proclamation. By calling attention to the rich Christian heritage preceding the separations between East and West and between Protestant and Catholic, this series will perform a major service to the cause of ecumenism." (Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., The late Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society, Fordham University )

"The Scriptures have been read with love and attention for nearly two thousand years, and listening to the voice of believers from previous centuries opens us to unexpected insight and deepened faith. Those who studied Scripture in the centuries closest to its writing, the centuries during and following persecution and martyrdom, speak with particular authority. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture will bring to life the truth that we are invisibly surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses." (Frederica Mathewes-Greene, commentator, National Public Radio )

"We speak abstractly in scholarly circles of the need to transcend looking at Christianity through the spectrum of modern presuppositions. This series, based on the commentaries of early Christians, gives us a concrete way to do this. It's a great idea." (Don S. Browning, Alexander Campbell Professor Emeritus of Ethics and the Social Sciences, The Divinity School, University of Chicago )

"There is no shortage of new books on the market and it may be a surprise to some to see InterVarsity Press producing the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. But, bearing in mind C. S. Lewis's admonition 'It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between,' this series fills a great need that many of us may not even be aware of--the need to read those who have gone before us." (D. Stuart Briscoe )

"For those who think that church history began around 1941 when their pastor was born, this commentary will be a great surprise. Christians throughout the centuries have read the biblical text and nursed their spirits with it and then applied it to their lives. These commentaries reflect that the witness of the Holy Spirit was present in his church throughout the centuries. As a result, we can profit by allowing the ancient Christians to speak to us today." (Haddon Robinson, Harold John Ockenga Distinguished Professor of Preaching, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary )

"All who are interested in the interpretation of the Bible will welcome the multivolume Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. Here the insights of scores of early church fathers are assembled and made readily available for significant passages throughout the Bible and Apocrypha. It is hard to think of a more worthy ecumenical project to be undertaken by InterVarsity Press." (Bruce M. Metzger, the late Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Princeton Theological Seminary )

"Across Christendom there has emerged a widespread interest in early Christianity, both at the popular and scholarly level. . . . Christians of all traditions stand to benefit from this project, especially clergy and those who study the Bible. Moreover, it will allow us to see how our traditions are rooted in the scriptural interpretations of the church fathers while at the same time seeing how we have developed new perspectives." (Alberto Ferreiro, professor of history, Seattle Pacific University )

5.0 out of 5 stars Making the exegesis of the church fathers readily accessible to today's pastors, scholars, and bible students., February 6, 2011

This review is from: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture CD-ROM Complete Set (The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture) (CD-ROM)
If you have followed the reference works published by InterVarsity Press over the past few years, you have no doubt noticed that they are making a concerted effort to expose a whole new generation to the writings of the church fathers. One series that has been an important part of this resurgence is the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture edited by Thomas C. Oden. My first encounters with the early volumes of this series was during my college days. You could often find one or more of these volumes open on my desk as a trusted source for my exegesis papers and other research. The twenty nine volumes making up the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture span both the Old and New Testaments as well as the Apocrypha. Given the time and language barrier that exists between today's reader and the church fathers, there certainly are gaps that need to filled in as we attempt to learn at the feet of the fathers. The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture does an exemplary job of helping to bridge that gap, making the exegesis of the church fathers readily accessible to today's pastors, scholars, and bible students.

There was clearly a lot of planning and forethought put into the organization and layout of this commentary set. As I say with any reference work, be sure to read all of the introductory material in order maximize your use of the resource. One important feature to note is that the scriptural text is divided into periocopes. Each pericope is followed by an overview, providing a succinct summary of the patristic commentary that follows. Besides the actual meat of the commentary, there are also many useful features to be found at the close of each volume. Depending on your level of research and interest, you may well be able to make use of some or all of the following:

* Appendix: Early Christian Writers and the Documents Cited
* Biographical Sketches
* Timeline of Writers of the Patristic Period
* Bibliography of works in the Original Languages
* Bibliography of works in English Translations
* Author/Writings Index
* Subject Index
* Scripture Index

As a hopeless bibliophile, I often struggle with the question of whether to buy reference works electronically or in print. If shelf space and budget were both limitless, I would suggest doing both. The reality of the situation is that this typically is not the case. The full twenty nine volume Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture set retails for $1450.00 in print and $385.00 on CD-ROM. The significant cost savings alone is a good argument for picking this set up on CD-ROM. If there is a particular volume that relates to a focused area of research or study, you may want to consider purchasing that particular volume in print in addition to the CD-ROM version. For me, that is especially true when it is a volume I want to read from cover to cover. Besides the cost savings, a second major incentive for purchasing this and other reference works electronically is the ease with which you can search. In the case of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture set, it is available for both LOGOS Bible Software and Accordance. The third major incentive for the CD-ROM edition is the ease with which you can create footnotes and bibliographic entries for the references you are copying into your papers. I'm an avid user of LOGOS Bible Software and this feature alone has revolutionized my writing. Having never used Accordance, I am unable to speak to whether or not they offer the same level of convenience when creating footnotes or bibliographic entries. My suspicion is that it is equally as helpful.

Regardless of whether you choose to go with the print or CD-ROM version of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, either one will be a welcome addition to your library. If you are looking for a wonderful birthday, Christmas, or graduation gift, every pastor, scholar, and Bible student would be greatly blessed by the opportunity to add this resources to their collection.

Absolutely delicious resource for Bible students. This magnificent project masterminded by Thomas C. Oden is now made accessible for most of us through this reasonably priced computer edition. The ability to cross-reference and search a commentary series is always good, and to be able to do this with the great Fathers of the Church is outstanding.
However, the fact that it's a Libronix 3.0 edition is a minor puzzle for Mac Users (and there seems to be no plan to release a Logos 4 version). However the workaround for me was to install it on a Windows machine, and synchronise all my licenses with Logos. That automatically synchronises the same files for every computer of mine running Logos 4, so I now have ACCS running smoothly on Logos 4 on my Mac. (Windows machines with Logos 4 will have no problems - I gather.)
So, I'm settling down to enjoy my computer access to this rich and rare library, so well integrated into the rest of my library system!

Purchased this with high hopes. Could not get it to instal or run. No matter what I tried. Had several emails with the Loginix System (Logos Software) tech help as that was the error I kept getting they simply ignored my request once their first proposed soultion did not work! Fine customer service from them....My advice NEVER bundle a Cd Rom that can only be run with a nother program even if you bundle them together it's just plain crazy. Especially when the CD Rom you purchase has an outdated Loginix software on it. Have to say Amazon were wonderful they immediately acepted the return and refunded my purchase price, even though they applied a 20% penalty for not returning within 30 days. I could not return in 30 days because I was too busy trying to run it and get an answer out of Loginix (Logos Software)
