Five stars isn't nearly good enough for something that will help your child love history!,
By Sonya Haskins "The Homeschool Advocate" (Jonesborough, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ancient Civilizations & the Bible: From Creation to Jesus Christ (History Revealed) (Paperback)
Rather than presenting students with a book where they learn little snippets of information about one short time in history, History Revealed uses a comprehensive curriculum approach.
In Ancient Civilizations and the Bible, students study history from the creation of the world (approximately 4004 BC) to the time of Jesus Christ. The great part is that Diana Waring presents the stories of history while taking into consideration everything going on in the world before, during and after this time period. We've learned so much about history since we started using this curriculum - and we've enjoyed the whole process! The student manual integrates art, music, architecture, math, and numerous other subjects (making it a comprehensive curriculum) as they relate to the topic being discussed. The workbook also has areas for vocabulary, student self-evaluation, short answer questions, maps, etc. There is literally something for everyone (reading, written work, audio CDs, hands-on projects, etc.), which is a neat way to encourage students with different learning styles and preferences. We actually purchased the audio CDs for this set (and for Romans, Reformers, and Revolutionaries) before we went on vacation were looking for some interesting audio CDs to listen to. Since we homeschool, we thought we'd try history CDs and we came upon the True Tales, Digging Deeper, and What in the World CDs. It was only later that we found out that the audio CDs went with the History Revealed curriculum series. The whole family enjoys them! I would recommend the CDs for any parents - even those who don't homeschool, but who just want to enjoy some great audio materials. While the curriculum is geared toward students in grades 6-12, the elementary activity book is meant for students in grades K-4. Younger students can learn right alongside their older siblings. The wonderful thing is that the curriculum also includes a comprehensive curriculum approach, which incorporates science, math, mazes, hands on activities, etc. all while the student studies history IN PERSPECTIVE. This multi-sensory approach not only helps retain a student's interest, but it also ensures that there is something for everyone when it comes to learning styles. I can't recommend this curriculum highly enough. When parents place this curriculum in students' hands, they will be begging to do schoolwork! History will never be the same after you use the History Revealed curriculum, whether it's set one (Ancient Civilizations and the Bible) or set two (Romans, Reformers, and Revolutionaries). You and your children will be so excited about history that you won't be able to get enough! Sonya Haskins, author of The Homeschooler's Book of Lists

Ancient Civilization and the Bible,
This review is from: Ancient Civilizations & the Bible: From Creation to Jesus Christ (History Revealed) (Paperback)
We are using this curriculum in our homeschool this year. I like the format and the variety of learning activities.
But, I do not like the Teacher's Guide. I expect a Teacher's Guide to have ALL the answers for the questions posed to the student, the vocabulary defined and samples for time lines. Often, I find I have to spend time searching through the text and often other texts to find the answer for a question that I don't readily know. My other critique involves the cooking activites. Often the recipes are not presented in the simplest method or involve seasonal/diificult to find ingredients. For example, if you start this book in the fall, you will be studying Persia in the winter. The recipe for Persia was a cold cucumber soup. Yummy I'm sure, but fresh cucumbers are not available in January. We ended up making Hummus. The Ezekial bread required 1/4 cup amounts of several unusual flours with no suggestion on where to find them in bulk or suggestion on where one might find pre-mixed ingredients. It would have cost far more that the two loaves of bread would be worth to have made the bread and barely used any of the flours if I had purchased them in the form available to me in my local store. Perhaps more than one choice could be offered or suggestions for where to find an alternative if season or food preferences/allergies neccessitate something else. I love the concept of combining the Bible and history but a bit of fine tuning would make this a 5+.

A little misleading,

This product is fine, but I felt it was misrepresented, since it was in the section for the actual book with that title. I thought I was ordering the book and not a test booklet, so I was disappointed to receive a test booklet. However, I received a refund promptly, so I would definitely deal with this company again. They were very accommodating for my having not read the fine print!
